I HAVE HAD FOUR DOGS HERE IN FRANCE OVER A PERIOD OF 24 YEAR. ALL FOUR WERE WELFARE CASES AND CAUSED NUMEROUS PROBLEMS. BUT I HELD ON TO EACH ONE UNTIL IT DIED OF OLD AGE AND WAS ALWAYS SAD TO LOSE THEM NO MATTER HOW HARD THEY HAD SOMETIMES MADE MY LIFE. THERE WAS ALSO LOTS OF LOVE IN THEM, FAR MORE THAN THE TROUBLE THEY SOMETIMES CAUSED.

When the saying about dogs being man's best friend came about, "Man" meant "Mankind", not just the male of the species.....women like dogs as much as men do. Dogs are the product of tens of thousands of years of breeding......Humans have bred dogs to fulfill many functions in their lives, these days mostly to provide Humans with companionship. Traits such as loyalty, an appearance of affection, facial expression that appears "friendly" to Humans, etc.......a dog for every Human desire.......Humans project their own feelings onto dogs who are bred to appear to reflect them......Dogs are love-slaves to their Human owners......because Humans do own them...... Humans who rely on dogs to fulfill all their emotional needs are unhealthy.....There is a culture of dog-lovers who proclaim that their dogs love them unconditionally ......accept them as they are, welcome them when they return home, etc.......These people are projecting, are deluded......That's not unconditional love, that's in-bred loyalty and other traits that give the illusion...... But if a person is incapable of having fulfilling relationships with other Humans, I suppose a dog is better than nothing.

These are interesting and intelligent replies, comments and observations of course...........but I can't help feeling there is more to this subject? Much room for further debate and reflections. I have never actually owned a dog...or dogs! But understand fully the love and commitment there must be to this commitment. That love and commitment can be surely extended to a human relationship in my way of thinking.....and experience of course! Would love to hear more on the subject???😊

I haven't seen any human being/man being as happy as a dog, jumping around when I appear! lol And that appreciative attitude lasts forever. Period! Happiness is when what you think, what you say, what you do are in harmony - M. Gandhi

Indeed......but why?😊

I haven't seen any human being/man being as happy as a dog, jumping around when I appear! lol And that appreciative attitude lasts forever. Period! Anthropomorphism is a wonderful thing.......Here you are projecting your own emotions onto the dog......Yes, many breeds of dog express excitement....many Humans seem to crave that trait in a pet......and choose, for their own satisfaction, to interpret it as "happiness". Whose appreciative attitude are you referring to? The Human's or the dog's?.......

I couple of years ago I was asked on a date. When the guy came to pick me up, his border-collie was on the front seat beside him......I was wearing black......As soon as we left the curb, the dog pawed the guy repeatedly, the guy gently pushed her paw away several times, but she was insistent. Then he held his hand out and she (the dog) put her paw in his hand and they held hands all the way to our destination.......The dog stayed in the car while we were out to dinner and a short stroll on the waterfront... It was obvious that this hand-holding was a long-term habit.......I couldn't shake the feeling it gave me......A deep revulsion......When we got back in the car, they did the same ritual and I really noticed how the smell of dog permeated the car.......He walked me to the door and stooped to kiss me goodnight, but I turned away. "is it the dog? he asked......I said yes and he stomped away........ .

Good for you.....very understandable indeed!👍😊

If I did not have vested interest in two different countries which includes travels once a year, I would like to have a dog. And I do no not explore my emotions concerning a pet. Sparkle, I tried to show some humor! I don't have a dog, but I am thinking of my daughter's Golden Retriever in Germany. When they came to visit, their dog Amie was alert some km before their arrival. When I opened the door, it was a "great hello", etc....... By the way, I had no problems in my long lasting relationships with men and don't recall any particular idiosyncrasies for their part. If I did not have vested interest in two different countries which includes travels once a year, I would like to have a dog. And I do no not explore my emotions concerning a pet. When it feels good, it is good. I could go on about the many neurotic relationships I have witnessed that people have with dogs.......But most dog owners I know have seemingly healthy relationships with their pets. I don't have a dog for many reasons, the chief one being that I wouldn't want to have an untrained dog......and I know how much time and effort it is to properly train a dog.......

Good to see the debate continuing ladies.....keep it up!😊

Good to see the debate continuing freely! But no pictures...as yet of all the prized pooches!! Let us all see and then we can comment!!👍😊

Is it beneficial to perhaps more then one dog?? And maybe a cat or two? How do the ladies think about that? To much to care about in the life perhaps!
