Welcome to Week 27 – A Week: Tour of Cape Cod, now known as Pearls' Coastal Capers!

Featuring: Ancient, Aftermath, Azure, Accessible, Abalone

ANCIENT
Possibly hard to read on a small screen, this plaque says “Ancient Cemetery. Seventeenth century burial ground for the first English settlers of the south side of this town, near the site of a pre-historic Native American burial ground.”. It was off season when I pulled into a Dennis, MA parking lot to explore this plaque and the surrounding area. The adjacent bike trail was quiet. The only sound came from the rustling leaves.

AFTERMATH
A huge pine tree that fell squarely between my condo building and the nearby parking spaces, taken down by wind gusts up to 80 mph. Whew, that was close! This is the aftermath of a powerful Nor'easter that knocked out power to my building and over three quarters of Cape Cod residents on October 27th. Storms can happen at any time but happily the official “hurricane season” ends in a couple of weeks.

AZURE
The azure sky is a contrasting backdrop for reeds at Clippers Launch, Dennis Port in early May.

ACCESSIBLE
Mobi-mats, ramps, and boardwalks are part of Cape Cod's plan for more accessible beach-going. This is dawn at Robbins Hill Road Beach, Mant's Landing in Brewster on a breezy September morning. I wish I had known about accessible beaches during my mother's later years. She loved the ocean and I can easily picture wheeling her chair out onto this ramp.

ABALONE
Abalone shell, also called Paua, is used to create jewelry such as this necklace. Most abalone jewelry is either vintage or made from farmed stock because over-fishing has led to regulation of wild stock. I always enjoy still life photography and this shot was especially fun, trying to figure out how to suspend the necklace and what to use as background.

Thanks for joining me for Pearls' Coastal Capers - “A week”!

I love Abalone shell......We have a type of Abalone here that is just as pearlescent and colourful as the huge, heavy California Abalone that is used for jewellery and inlays......Many year ago, when I was living in small float-house, and found Abalone shells every day on my beach-walks, I hung Abalone shells from the trim along the eaves......I was up on a ladder drilling holes a few inches apart and hanging Abalone shells with fine fishing line run through the natural hole in the shells........The breeze would move them and they would flash and reflect the sunlight in soft colour against the bleached wood......

There has been a trade in California Abalone here for thousands of years.....It was highly prized by the First Nations artists for inlay in their wood carvings.......I have used it that way myself and also for making jewellery.......It's really fun to work, as it is up to about an inch thick and every layer reveals another colour........

Yes, it's nice to see things moving in this direction. Just today I was reading about a product I had never heard of .. WaterWheels. It's a wheelchair that works on soft surfaces like sand and it floats too!

I'm not a huge fan of unfamiliar cemeteries either but I do like the one where my ancestors' graves are. It's a peaceful experience every year to go there on Memorial Day and plant flower around the stone. For the last few years my daughter has accompanied me and that was very helpful.

I can imagine how much fun it would be to work with a material that changes colors as new layers are revealed!

Enjoyed all the pictures, especially the cemetery one.

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Oh Pearls your photos are beautiful. The reeds and the abalone are my favorites. You are so great at taking photographs. Every week it is a new adventure.

I enjoyed all your 'A' selections Pearls and especially the reeds against the azure sky and abalone shell pendant with its earthy tones. The paua (Haliotis iris) unique to NZ has beautiful iredescent blue/green/purple hues.

Thanks Lilium! The reeds photo was an unanticipated "find" in my archive. I took it in May when I was trying to find an estuary photo for E week. The full photo includes sand, shoreline, and water. But I never posted it because the water was brackish and the photo wasn't very pretty. It caught my attention this week when I was looking through my archive for "azure" and figured out that I could crop out most of the original photo and just present the reeds and sky.

Old cemeteries both fascinate and scare me. I like the site called findagrave because it lets me explore and get genealogy questions answered without actually being in the cemetery.
