What Makes You Happy?

We've had many sad losses on this site in the past few weeks, so let's see if we can turn our focus on happiness and joy for a bit.

Happiness is different things for different people, and different cultures, defined as a mental or emotional state of well-being characterized by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy.[1]

I love to watch HGTV, and yesterday watching My Home, Your Money there was a young Asian & American couple embarking on buying their first home as they were moving in together. The Aisan parents of the 29 yr. old man was helping with the purchase. Normally HGTV is not a comedy, but these shows are better than Comedy Central. I haven't laughed so hard in awhile. Anyway, it was interesting to see the clash of cultures in play, and what makes each culture happy.

I find happiness in small things...the smiles of my greatgandchildren, the laughter of my mother who is recovering from a stroke, hugs from my Honey, watching the sun come up/go down in the quiet and in the friendships I have made here as well as other places in my life. Happiness to me is my state of being now I guess...when I lost my son I feared I would never feel any happiness again. As I thought about him & his short life I knew that is NOT what he would want for me...he was a happy go lucky carefree 14 year old until the moment of his accident. The one thing that made him unhappy was to see me unhappy sooooooo......that is my daily goal...feel joy in everything! Sorry so long winded here .

Some believe in destiny, some believe in fate. I believe that happiness is something we create

I find a good deal of happiness and contentedness in living simply.

A sunny day...my son's smile and his kiss on my cheek as he departs to school...a short stay in SFF to read up on my amigos/as... as other's have stated, life's simple things. It helps to be positive.

I'm most happy when I can do something to put a smile on the faces of my family & friends.

I know that may sound corny.....but.... it is what it is.

How do we gauge anything? Unless there is something to compare to. Today (for me) it may be lizard on a rock sunning. Only to have a road runner grab it in it's beak. Or all the doors closed with out any extra effort. I was 'happy' that I was dealt a royal flush on the video poker machine I was playing. I'd a been 'happier' if I played 10 quarters as opposed to 5 nickles.

What make me happy? What can I say, other than, anything that doesn't make me sad?

Good blog, Sunshine.
"What make me happy? ..., anything that doesn't make me sad?".
Wise words C3C5...

There are a lot of things that make me happy, as you have told: love, smiles, hugs, kisses, my grandies, friendship, nature, go out for a walk, to have an icecream, laugh, travel, spiritual moments and so on... I always feel an inner joy. But sometimes that happiness is clouded by sorrow or sickness, especially when this limitation prevents me from going out and enjoy....

When I lost my significant other, I was so sad for so long. In fact I thought I would never be happy again.

When I had grieved long enough, I slowly began to realize that happiness has to come from inside oneself. One cannot expect their happiness to come from other people. I could not keep saying to myself that without my partner,I can't be happy! I had to learn that I do not have to have a partner or a family or money or a fantastic job to make me happy. If my happiness comes from within, I will be pleased with whatever I have or don't have. In order to reach this state, I had to become whole again. I had to establish my identity as an individual person. I had to establish my own opinion of things, my own tastes in everything. I had to become my own person and not rely on anyone else to 'take charge' or 'speak up' for me or 'make me look good'. I had to think as one, act as one. I had to know me and love me!

NOw that I feel 'whole' again and know who and what I am and what direction I want to go, so very much makes me happy. The beauty of nature ranks high. Sunsets, sunrises, trees, flowers, the moon, the stars, a soft summer breeze, birds...on and on and on.

I also love people. Talking to and listening to them makes me happy.

Painting with watercolour and reading makes me happy.

Being independant and able to express myself in writing or speech makes me happy.

The list is endless for me.

I now know that if I ever again feel incredibly needy or do not feel whole and do not know who I am or where I belong, nothing will make me happy. Not friends or family or a partner. Nothing.

My opinion, for what it's worth. lol

Good point E.T. We do tend to appreciate the small things we took for granted when we almost lose them, e.g., the ability to walk, talk, smile hear., etc.

I have only recently learned this type of happiness. Stuff does weigh one down and cause stress trying to take care of all the stuff.

MsJoe,
It's great that you can find happiness in numerous things, which means if you lose one thing, you will still be able to find happiness in other things.

A sunny day usually perks me up also. According to several research studies, people are reportedly 'happier" that live in sunny climates. The weather does seem to have a bearing on our moods. And numerous studies attest to the healing qualities of touch...especialy from our kids.

I'm sure you are smiling too when you make them smile. There's something about smiles and laughter that's exhilarating.

Really great comments guys. You are very rich people indeed to realize what brings you happiness. By knowing this, you can always pull on these sources to maintain your happiness.
You know, just thinking about the things that make you happy and make you feel joy is very healing to the spirit, as you are recalling these happy times. True, life is a series of ups and downs, but knowing the avenues of happiness for you, you are always in a position to tap those sources and maintain more ups than downs.

My Significant Other has yet to reach the same level of simplicity, and that sometimes cause rancour.

MsED, you have so many things in your happiness arsenal so even if you lose a few, you still have lots of resources left. My mother and father's jokes about me use to always make me smile when I thought about them, they still do even though they are long gone. My parents could have performed as stand up comics when they talked about me. My friends picked up right where they left off. Through them pointing out my sometimes stubborn behavior in such a humorous manner, I have really loosened up and learned to laugh at myself and not sweat the small stuff. I'm smiling and almost laughing now as I write, remembering this.
