Empty Nest Today while I planted petunias into our front hanging baskets Mrs Robin decided it was time for her babies to vacate the nest. With tw0 plump babies in the bushes the third left the nest to join them. I wasn't able to get any decent pictures before the family departed the brush on a short flight across the road into the long grass of the ditch and corn field. |

I don't know if the Robins "re-use" the nest or not for a second liter of babies,. If any of you might enlighten me whether or not I should put up a "Vacancy" sign or not. I don't want to tear the nest down and clean the porch if they are coming back.

A few days back my wife took a picture of the neighborhood road runner on a neighbors porch------then another of him taking flight. I Should enter pictures here but have had little success in doing that for some reason. She also took one of a fox in our back yard. A neighbors night camera took one last week of a bobcat in the back yard at the man cave. I will try to do a blog with them again at a later date. I enjoy your blogs.

They may very well come back and next year the babies may come home and reuse their birthplace. Enjoy them !

My sister has two doors that open onto her open back porch, but only uses one of them. Several years ago, a pair of barn swallows built their nest above the unused one. By the time she noticed it, they had eggs in it and she didn't want to disturb them. They made such a horrible mess, with poop and feathers all over the porch that as soon as the babies flew away, she removed the nest. The next year, they tried to come back, but she swept the top of that doorway every day to discourage them. Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

Why not trim the bushes and move the nest the best U can into the bushes. Somewhere close to where it was

I am so tired tonight. I spent 4 hours this afternoon resurrecting the next door neighbor's 6' high solid steel panel fence that was listing at a 30 degree angle from wind pressure. It hadn't been built properly fro the start. The posts were only in the ground 6". I installed 4 anchor posts 4' deep into the ground, then used a come along to winch the fence back in place at each anchor location. Once plumb, I attached a 2x4 between the fence post and the anchor posts using the air nailer. The fence is now straight as can be and very solid.

You are free to clear the nest away as soon as all the babies have vacated. Robins do not reuse their nests, even within the same season. That is because of various parasites that can be present in the nesting material.

Back before I sold the business we always enjoyed observing several kildeer birds nest on the gravel road that went around back of the building. Actually they had no nest. LOL Their eggs would be on a very flat area among gravel. When a predator or person got near their eggs or babies, they would fake broken wings and run ahead to decoy us away from the area. LOL Videos of it with distress calls on you tube. One time the driver of an 18 wheeler delivery truck came rushing into the shop asking------WHAT'S WITH THAT CRAZY BIRD OUT THERE ? He said when he stepped down out of his truck a crazy bird ran out from under it & went after him. LOL We went out there and found the front wheel passenger side tire was only about 18 inches from several eggs. That was a very upset momma LOL Loud & aggressive.

I have about 100 nests around this old Spanish style house. There are Barn and Cliff swallows. They do no harm. I enjoy their chatter at night. I also have Bobcats, Mountain Lions, Bears, Elk, Deer and Antelope. Oh yes, Diamondback's. We. All just try to live in harmony. The forest service wants to release the Mexican Wolf in the nearby mountains and that, I have mixed feelings.
