$$$$$$$$$$$ Western traders, including those from the United States, had long sought a variety of Chinese products (including furniture, silk and tea), but found there were few products that China wanted from the West. American trade with China began as early as 1784, relying on North American exports such as furs, sandalwood, and ginseng, but American interest in Chinese products soon outstripped the Chinese appetite for these American exports. The Chinese long trusted the quality silver content of the Spanish Milled Dollar, However, by the 1860's with fall of the main silver producing areas of the Spanish Empire coupled with increased demand merchants needed assistance from the government. Trade dollars were silver coins minted as trade coins by The United States to facilitate trade with China and the Orient. They approximated in weight and fineness to the Spanish dollar, which had set the standard for a de facto common currency for trade in the Far East. You can see 420 grains of 900 Fine Silver. The first trade dollars were struck in 1873, and the majority of the coins were sent to China. Eventually, bullion producers began converting large amounts of silver into trade dollars, causing the coins to make their way into American commercial channels. This caused frustration among those to whom they were given in payment, as the coins were largely maligned and traded for less than one dollar each. In response to their wide distribution in American commerce, the coins were officially demonetized in 1876, but continued to circulate. Production of business strikes ended in 1878, though the mintage of proof coins officially continued until 1883. The trade dollar was re-monetized when the Coinage Act of 1965 was signed into law. The Mailman finally brought ours today. |

nice coins. i won an auction recently. silver coins as well as silver and gold notes. i read a congressman has introduced a bill to return us to gold standards. no money would be printed unless there is a matching value in gold. maybe not in fort Knox. surely not in Biden's or hunters hands

eBay seems to losing credibility on all fronts. They do not seem to be keeping a close eye on their merchants.

I did not know this part of Trade in the past. Most I learned about China was reading books by Pearl S. Buck.... That was long ago! Thank you for this interesting Blog. Happiness is when what you think, what you say, what you do are in harmony - M. Gandhi
