This is soooooo funny. Just this week...seriously, I came across an article that listed items that were a waste of money. I come across articles like this often and I always check it out and usually I find a few things that I too have consumed. Well, this latest article mentioned 1 thing that I was really surprised to see on the list. Now I do have this item in my house, but I never, ever, saw it as a waste of my money. Guess what it was? It was an 'electric can opener'...LOL Now trust me, I'm not here to burst your moment of joy. I'm here to celebrate the amusement in how horribly wrong that article was! Thanks for bringing a smile to my face.

Gosh everything I buy makes my life easier or more pleasurable, right down to ice-cream.

I have had electric can openers that sit on the counter in the past, but always seemed to go back to the manual ones. My daughter bought me one with a large handle that helped ease the pain for a long time, but even that got to be difficult to use. Then I bought a handy little gadget that just sits on the top of the can. I push a button and it goes around, cutting the can under the edge of the top. I have to change the batteries occasionally, but I like it and will get another like it when this one dies.
I have a few little gadgets to make life easier, that actually do, like the telescoping handled Swiffer duster, and some that don't, like the rotating broom....... I forget what it is called.
But I can't recall what my latest purchase was, unless you want to count the new dishwasher.

Forgot to tell you...I bought a new personal shredder. I tried to fix the old one thinking it had to be jammed. I took it completely apart and it was hopeless.

FUNNY YOU SHOULD BUY AN ELECTRIC CAN OPENER. I HAVE HAD ONE SINCE I GOT MARRIED IN 1975! AND NOW IT IS HARD TO FIND A CAN THAT REQUIRES AN OPENER AT ALL, JUST ABOUT ALL OF OURS HAVE SELF-OPENING GISMOS.
I DID BUY A NEW MATTESSS IN NOVEMBER. THE OLD ONE WAS 20 YEARS OLD SO THE PURCHASE WAS DEFINITELY NECESSARY AND PRACTICAL.

That's good information to know. Personally, I have really liked my T-Fal cookware and have been thinking about replacing it because the nonstick part is starting to look a bit scratched........ after about 20 years. There are so many advertisements for all kinds of copper or diamond surfaces that it gets confusing. Add to the mix is the weight and the ease for old hands to use the handles.

I bought this one for $5 at Lowe's over a year ago. I just happened to be walking by the display and they were on sale. Occasionally I have a problem with the magnet connecting with the lid of a large can, so I just slide a knife between it and the lid and it works fine.
I had problems in the past with regular electric ones when I had to hold the can up for it to open.
I agree with Archer about the cans with pull tabs. Love it. But large cans don't have that option.

I'm curious about why people buy so much canned food that they need an electric opener........I can't think of anything I'd rather eat canned than fresh or frozen........I still have all my Corning ware and stainless pots that I received for wedding presents in 1972........I have added a few smaller pieces more fitting for a single person. I use cast iron frying pans that I have seasoned.......

My latest practical purchase.........I'm looking for a couple of items that I will purchase when I find what I want........A new sound-system and a digital art-projector.....My art projector weighs about 40lb and is huge.........the digital ones are about the size of a small camera and can do so much more....It has USB ports and can be hooked up to my camera, phone, lap-top etc...I haven't quite been able to justify the price to myself yet......

We do use more fresh and frozen veggies, but I do not like fresh or frozen green beans or peas, so canned it is. Also, chili beans and tomato products and black olives are in cans in my pantry, plus canned fruits.

Earthy funny you should mention can openers. I Have one that you attach to the lid of can by squeezing both handles to click it in place. It is getting harder to use as I don't have the strength in my hands anymore and more so now since I fell 4 months ago. I have been told with the electric ones they leave a sharp edge on the can and you have to be careful you don't cut yourself. I might look into the battery operated one. Opening jars has also become a problem. I have to put the top of the jar in hot water to break the seal and then use one of those jar openers. Does anyone have an answer to that problem?
I use mainly fresh or frozen vegetables but I do use tomato sauce, canned tomatoes, different kinds of beans and canned tuna and salmon. My recycling container always seems to have lots of bottles and cans. One cannot get away from it entirely.

A humble tongue cleaner/scraper (replacement) - surprisingly, not an easy find in local stores so very pleased on eventually coming across one :- )

Why so defensive? I open a couple of cans a week with my manual can-opener and it has never been a problem.....I wasn't asking you what you ate, I just couldn't imagine that opening a can was difficult, so I thought it must be a lot of cans.........LOL..

Jars are the worst. Sometimes I put the jar in the fridge if it is pickles or jam. Big mistake as that seems to make them even harder to open. I do everything with the jar to get opened. I stick it in hot water and then plop the top of the jar on a towel on the counter to wake it up. I use a knife to tap the lid. My sister uses one of those pointed gizmos that you use to punch a hole in a can and she goes around the jar with the pointed end on the lid and pries at the lid. It releases the seal when you do that.

When I was growing up my mother quite often boiled the potatoes in their skins. All of the nutrients are in the water so it wasn't thrown out bu mom used it for making pancake syrup. Peeled potatoes when cooked the water was used to make gravy. Potatoes that were cooked in their skins mom would slice them and fry them in butter. She would also stretch it further and add cubed bread that was soaked in milk and add to potatoes and also a couple of eggs added to the mix. I haven't eaten that in years. This was served quite often when someone would drop in unexpectedly and she would have to stretch the food.

Yes Earthy we are around the same age. Sounds like your mother cooked like mine. Homemade noodles were made often in my house. Another noodle like dough she made was pot pie of which the noodle dough was cut into squares and then dropped into chicken broth of which she had added carrot, onion and sometimes potato to it prior to adding the pot pie squares. I have never in all my cooking days attempted to make noodles. Plus we raised free range chickens so the flavor of the chicken was 100% better than what you get today. The egg yolks were almost orange and no comparison to eggs today.
