I have long wondered why election day wasn't a "holiday". Of course, these days, with early voting available there is no excuse to not vote.

SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD IDEA IF PEOPLE ACTUALLY GET OUT THERE AND VOTE. THE TURNOUT OVER HERE IS SO LOW NOW THAT THE IDEA OF MAKING VOTING MANDATORY IS BEING TOYED WITH.

Did I say I opposed the idea? I said I wondered why it hadn't already been made a "holiday".
As for Columbus day, it isn't a paid holiday for most workers in our area anyway.
But, Bob did make a sensible comment about the fact that there is not an election every year.
Why is it a sorry phenomenon that folks who read and commented on your blog tend to be of the conservative persuasion. If you look at it from the other perspective, why isn't it sad that people of the liberal perspective didn't read and comment support for the idea?

I call it like I see it Earthy. What you see here is racist inspired motivation to suppress the vote at all costs because the conservative movement in America is dead and has been a miserable failure for almost 40 years. Oh sure, they will whine and whine and whine. But court after court has taken the republican party to task for illegal voter suppression efforts. They have closed voting locations to create absurd lines and delays, they have rolled back early voting opportunities and some republican states end voting as early as 6 p.m. on election day. They have purged voter rolls illegally, refused to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act and they launched fraudulent attempts to prove voter fraud and then shut down the investigation when the only fraud they discovered was Trump voters committing the fraud.

America needs aggressive action to stomp out all efforts at suppression. We need national, court approved redistricting to end this perverse practice of election rigging. I recognize it might take time to set this up so nobody gets an advantage...but surely we can do this with an implementation date of the first national election to occur within 6 years of passage. That is what will propel this country forward...the truth, and an end to the lies.

A high visibility national holiday alternative would be welcome. I would even support beginning the holiday at noon.

Bingo...exactly the kind of whine I predicted.

I don't look to see what others write before I comment on a blog if I intend to comment on the blog itself. In fact, I was the first to comment on this blog. If I want to comment on something someone said, I will quote that comment.
Ok, so I think I understand. If some folks comment on your blog, and they have similar conservative leaning, they don't think for themselves? And it appears we aren't welcome on your blogs. Ok. Sorry to have bothered you.

What were the accomplishments of Columbus and why are they more important to the USA than voting?
