There are various kinds of people who one may be acquainted with. In my definition, all of us are friends unless we turn inimical. Naturally, the depth of friendship varies which is quite in accordance with what Amiblue writes. What Jefferson meant is that rather than getting into a verbal or physical combat, we can, in a gentlemanly or ladylike manner, 'agree to disagree' and work from there on issues other than the ones that we disagreed upon.
