Christian Cake Maker goes to the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court announced on Monday that it would hear the case of a Christian baker in Colorado who refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple, teeing up the country's highest stakes legal showdown about whether laws that protect LGBT people from discrimination can violate religious people's constitutional rights.

The justices granted certiorari to hear the case, Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, in its next term, which begins in October.

I don't smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol. I won't buy them for someone and if I had a choice, I wouldn't sell it to them either. Nevertheless, when I was a Wal-Mart Cashier, I had to sell tobacco, beer and wine unless the customer was . I was probably more vigilant about checking ID than some of the other cashier. For example if a group of young people came in, I would check ALL their ID's and if one of them was , I would refuse the sale.

I would prefer to make a wedding cake to a gay couple versus selling cigarettes to a straight couple. It will be interesting to see how this Supreme Court case goes.

My husband and I were married at a Nudist Resort. We wanted two cakes. One with the Tree House Logo and another with a Native American Couple. The first bakery refused to do the cakes so we went to a second bakery. They did the cake with no problems.

This whole thing is ridiculous and could have been handled the same way that you and Grumpy handled it.... just find someone who will accommodate what is wanted.
Is this the case where the bakery had served the gay couple for years, just did n't want to do the wedding cake because they had religious objections to a "gay marriage"?
IF, as you were, a person works for a company, I think you are bound to serve anything that the company does...... but if it is a person's own business, I think they should have the right to serve what they chose.

That was not the issue at all........ the Christians who owned the bakery did not want to participate in a gay marriage by furnishing the cake. I don't believe they were concerned about who eats their products, in fact if it is the case I remember, they couple were customers of theirs.
My daughter bakes wedding cakes, and is very much involved in the wedding/reception..... the cake reflects what the couple wants, and she is there to assemble and decorate it and the whole cake table.

"homo supporters"... "homo supporters"? WTF wrong with you?

    Sound kind of "loose fitting"
Not like a Trump supporter, that has sucked your balls up into your brain.

morality cake, that what this country needs , The baker didn't have to make a traditional layher cake.. he just could have made a layhim cake....., or a fruit cake. or just "cupcakes".....

The gay couple, well, they did not go to the baker to buy a cake, they went to get it shove up their azz.... they like it that way......

The absurdity of it all.. is beyond imagination.
I totally agree....The absurdity IS beyond imagination...These are the same people that think everyone should have to participate in their absurd Religious rituals.......like prayer in schools,The 10 commandments in the City Hall, Swearing on the Bible in court, manger scenes in the village square.......

Gee Maisie, I must have imagined all the News Stories I've read in the last couple of decades about the Christians hollering about God getting thrown out of schools and common lands and buildings.......It's constant.....even butting into the personal medical decisions of others......And every November the Fox hysterical gnashing of teeth and weeping start about "Merry Christmas"......They even rant about the coffee cups at Starbucks not being Chrismasy enough.....and every year the same people on this site call me a hypocrite because I celebrate Christmas......So absurd. If "the town agrees" it's nobody else's business.....The problems arise when the town isn't unanimous......The instances when everyone agrees don't get into the news.......What we see is all those instances where there are people in the town who don't want it.....as you very well know.

Yes, the US does have separation of Church and State in the Constitution, but in practice, there is a constant struggle between interpretations. I saw a speech by Trump today where he ranted on about God and Government and Faith .......he also tweeted it ...all capitals.....IN AMERICA WE WORSHIP GOD, NOT GOVERNMENT.......................

In Canada, we have a lot of different religions, but we also have lots of people who are not religious....for instance, this site is the only place in my life that I have used or been called the term "Atheist".....religion or lack of it just doesn't come up in my world. ....we don't have that huge population of in-your-face Evangelical Christians who are constantly trying to push their God Agenda onto others........We are more like the Europeans.......The Public Spaces are Secular...No one has even thought of praying in school for couple of generations., It just seems that there is this constant DRAMA in the US caused by this huge Christian Faction trying to push their agenda onto everyone else........And you Americans seem to think about the British Royals more than we do.....LOL.......

Just so it wouldn't look like discrimination against gay people, maybe those cake bakers shouldn't stop at just wedding cakes. Maybe the Supreme Court will order them to have all customers submit a comprehensive list of ALL their sins before they can buy anything. I mean is being gay more of a sin than spousal abuse, selling drugs, coveting your neighbour's wife, murder etc. etc. ?

I don't think that's the case.
It's the other way around... You show bigotry for those who view religion differently than you.

You talk of government interference, regulations, and imposition on YOUR freedom.

But your religion is your government, and it interferes, regulates and is an imposition on the freedom of others.

Sparkles idea of religion, may be harsh but not as harsh as your view of government.

Sparkle and i do not care about YOUR view of religion and government. Until you wish to impose that view on the rest of us. The hypocrosy is amazing.

Trumps has just played with your ideas on intolerance. You think he cares about gays or transgenders. He doesn't care, He just cares about how he can use it.
you let him do it.

You think if you and gay person stood in front of Trump, He would give you preference? You mean nothing more to him than a gay person, an ugly women, or any poor SOB in this country..

Hi Seek: I think a lot of people also have trouble with the human body, and bodily functions. They seem obsessed with who's going into which bathroom, who's in the locker room changing or having a shower, who people should love or marry. Yet these same intolerant people probably don't object to explicit s*x scenes in movies, so long as the actors are of the opposite s*x.
