A Liberal's Take on Charlottesville Situation

I lived in Charlottesville, Virginia for a time. The Sam's Club where I was employed was one of the most diverse workplaces that I've worked in. I have also been to Lexington, Virginia. I visited Robert E Lee's Grave and attend services at the Church where he was a member.

The trouble with tolerance is that there is always someone deciding what to tolerate. A free society does not tolerate people; it allows them to live their own values. And a tolerant society is not free. It is a dictatorship of virtue that is intolerant toward established values in order to better tolerate formerly intolerable values.

A group from a white supremacy group came to Charlottesville to protest the removal of a Robert E Lee Statue. Agree or disagree, they have a constitutional right to protest the removal. They have a constitutional right to fly the confederate flag from their hoggy pick up trucks. They even have the right to think they are superior. That doesn't make them correct but neither are the snake handlers.

Plowing a car into a crowd of people is definitely criminal behavior. Nevertheless, the counter protesters had to know that when messing with the KKK or the Nazi groups, that there was going to be a fight. Perhaps they can go burn Monticello to the ground.

It's a matter of free speech, isn't it.

If folks don't agree with a group, just stay away. Don't give them an audience. They have as much right to march as any other group.... like it or not.

It's only when there's conflict that the media takes notice.

When the people were plowed down by the car, they were crowding the streets and blocking traffic. I have seen this happen on freeways. I have been to protests before and we instructed to abide by the law and IGNORE the counter protestors. I would always stay on the outer perimeters and avoid getting stuck in the crowd.

Although I do not agree with those white supremacy groups, you are right in that they do have the right to gather and protest, however I believe they came to cause trouble. They knew, and probably wanted, their archrivals, the Antifa, would also show up, looking for a fight.
I wonder, if the Antifa had not also shown up though, if there would have been any violence...... we know the Antifa destroys property where ever they protest, but does those white supremacy groups do that? I don't remember reading about them destroying property at their protests.
Both of these groups came to fight because they knew the other group would show up..... both are in the wrong.

Meanwhile, in the Breitbart Comment Section and on the internet sites that planned and coordinated the Charlotteville Right-Wing protest, they are celebrating the death and injury..

I'm sure they are! Just as the Antifa would be if one of theirs had driven a car through the supremacy crowd.
Both sides demonstrate pure hatred towards anyone who doesn't agree with them and both sides are to be condemned for their actions.

I do not consider the Confederacy as "our" enemy..... there were two factions of the civil war with vast political differences. Both sides were American soldiers. Both the North and the South have great impact on our heritage and history as a country, and history should not be erased.

Something happening in your imagination is not the same as when it occurs in actual, physical reality.......I know that's a difficult concept for the "faithful" to grasp, but...........

Isn't this strange? I said basically what Star said, only I am ridiculed for my faith?
I guess I better put a check on my imagination, because I must have imagined Antifa, BLM, and other radical left groups burning cars and smashing windows?

I repeat, IMO, BOTH are guilty of this violence in Charlottesville because BOTH came there with the intentions of having a fight, and BOTH should be condemned.

The 13 Colonies also seceded from the mother country, formed their own nation, build an army. Had the United States lost the war, we would all have single payer health care.

In your post that I replied to, you said that you imagine that if a member of the Antifa had plowed a car into a group of White Supremacists and killed Heather Heyer, they would be celebrating. .......But that scenario only happened in your imagination, not in actual, physical reality. The reason I brought up your faith is because of the meaning of the word "Faith"........Faith is believing that stuff that is real only in your imagination, is real in actual, physical, factual existence.......No one whose reality is based in the factual world would imagine a scenario, judge the imagine scenario as being morally equivalent to the actual scenario and conclude that they are even-stevan.........

the Nazis, for one.
I noticed a lot of swastikas among the flags carried by the alt right marchers in Charlottesville.

I agree completely.

That's why I think statues of Saddam, Hitler, and Stalin should be put back in place.

Additionally, the street where I was born should go back to being Horst Wessel Strasse.
