Once Upon a Time
The Democratic Party was the party of slavery and Jim Crow,
and the Republican Party was the party of emancipation and racial integration.

The Story is that the Southern Rednecks ditched the Democrat party and became Republicans as a reaction to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, That story is a myth.

Another myth is that the Republicans got Southern Support by appealing to the racist nature of Southerners.

There is a line that leads from Republican President Abraham Lincoln to Republican President Dwight Eisenhower that shows pro civil right activism. Eisenhower was supportive of the Brown versus the Board of Education Supreme Court decision for desegregation of the races in the school. He sent the National Guard to Little Rock, Arkansas to enforce the court decision. Regardless, he received support of many of the Southern States in his bid for reelection to a second term.

The Democrats opposed emancipation, and the Civil Rights Act which finally passed in 1964, 21 Democrat Senators opposed the bill and only one switched to Republican.

Republicans did not hold a majority of Southern Congressional seats until 1994, This is Thirty AFTER the 1964 Civil Right Act. The REAL Reason the South votes overwhelmingly Republican is because of conservative values. God, Guns, Love of County and Pro-Life. History has moved on and so has the South.
