Power Outage/Getting out of Town/Politics&OOPS Moments!!!

MonPower sent out a text that the power would be out from 2pm to 10pm. My plan was to get the FiretrUCK out of town during that window of town.

Mozart needed an inspection and a ball bearing repair. So early morning was Java at Hardees with the ROMEOs . ROMEO= Retired Old Men Eating Out. Once Mozart had her repair and inspection sticker - I headed to Lewisburg for a 12 Step Meeting and lunch with the 12 Step girlfriends.

I decided to find a movie afterwards. It would not be a movie of my choosing but the timing was right and it's better than sitting at home with no electricity. The movie was Mine 9 about the dangers of West Virginia coal mines. It is definitely an issue in Appalacia.

The movie ended and it was "Meet the Candidates" sponsored by the Greenbrier County Republican Club at the Greenbrier Valley Visitor Center in downtown Lewisburg.

I sat next to one of my GOP buddies. I whispered that one of the candidates was mean to me when I was a Wal-Mart Cashier. Lets hope that she's a democrat and not a republican. If's she's a republican, I'll forgive her and vote for her anyway. We all have bad days. "There is no reason to be rude," my gentle GOP buddy commented. We get used to difficult customers. Most of the time, I just laugh it off.

It turned out that the candidates were running for seats in Lewisburg thus I won't be voting for them regardless. One of the candidates talked about the schools and how minorities students are poorly treated, disciplined more severely and their concerned ignored. A candidate of the other side remarked, "I don't see color ………" I sensed an immediate "oops" and whispered to my GOP buddy. People of color don't like hearing that. Sure enough, the candidate on the other side responded, "You don't see color, You don't see me!" Her opponent was flustered and one man stood up, remarked, "Do we have to make this about race!" and stormed out of the room.

White privilege and white fragility at it's best. It's been a burning topic at my Quaker gatherings but I suspect that most of the local churches with GOP attendees don't talk about it too much. This was actually a topic that I was talking to staff in our local Congresswoman's office earlier this month. We were talking about the situation at the USA Border/the Palestinian Crisis and Racial Justice at the AFSC gathering so I took the information to Washington D.C. I stopped at the FCNL office, asked what bills should I present to cover these topics and took them into the Senate/Congressional offices.

Ironically - It was the racial justice issue that we discussed in Philadelphia that was where I determined that I could make an impact. It might start at the local level by education some of my local GOP comrades.

I learned not to worry about offending POC. I am going to inadvertly do it anyway, find out about it, make amends and do better next time.

Sounds like you are keeping yourself busy! I hear that keeps a person young.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.
