The Holy Family, Two Saints, Pagan Deities, & O'Malley

Earlier this year, my and a paternal cousin were dealing with housing situations. I hiked over to St. Joseph's on Capitol Hil in Washington D.C. and lit candles for them. At the same time, I was putting together a workshop that I have scheduled for a SAYMA gathering in June.

I frequently ask for divine intervention for life's situations for my loved ones and myself. I also realize that my Higher Power is not Santa Claus nor is it my place to present him with a "honey do" list. We are partners. I am the vessel that he works through. Taking without giving is a Dead Sea scenario.

I didn't realize that a simple candle ritual to help family members with housing issues would snowball into a major venture. I was in Philadelphia for an AFSC gathering. The burning issues were the Central American Migrant situation, Palestine, and Racial Justice.

It occurred to me - why not do the same candle ritual that I did for my family for refugees looking for a home with a better way of life. While it is my belief that we need to control our borders and who comes into the United States, we can do so without compromising our humanity.

So today, I found a seven-day ration challenge.. The idea is to live on the same foods as a Syrian refugee in exchange for raising funds to help the refugees. The challenge had so many sign-ups that they didn't have enough food packages to send the signees. That's no problem. I already have most of it in my kitchen. It's beans, rice, chickpeas, flour, and oil. I am passing on the sardines. Yuk!

A wise man once told me that fasting breaks the devil's back. I wouldn't mind seeing Old Scorch hobbling around as he surrenders his fiddle of gold. I will trade that fiddle of gold to help vulnerable people rebuild their lives in safety.

Interesting challenge.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.
