CanadianThanksgiving, Loyalist & Samhain USA

Canadian Thanksgiving
We're looking a fall sunrise in Alberta, Canada, in honor (or should we say 'honour' of Canadian Thanksgiving. The holiday is officially celebrated on the second Monday in October, though many families gather the previous day. The first known Thanksgiving celebration in Canada was organized by English explorer Martin Frobisher in 78 when he reached Newfoundland. Years later, American loyalists who were faithful to England during the Revolutionary War moved to Canada and brought traditions with them, such as eating turkey on Thanksgiving. As in the US, a Canadian Thanksgiving table is likely to have a horn-shaped cornucopia filled with festive-looking fruits and grains. The menu often includes turkey, but also regional dishes like salmon and Nanaimo bars—a layered chocolate dessert.

Until this year, football was also part of the tradition, with the Canadian Football League hosting games every year from 1958 to 2018. For the 2019 season, however, no games were scheduled as the league considers some broader scheduling changes.

While the Canadians are celebrating Thanksgiving, The United State Citizens are celebrating Samhain aka Halloween. Since I am working at a Haunted Farm, I am celebrating all month. I suspect that the Canadians also have Halloween. Columbus Day is not much of a celebration because banks and post offices stay open. Poor Columbus has been getting a lot of bad press lately. It is ironic that folks who are mostly European ancestry will protest Columbus claiming that he oppressed their indigenous ancestors. Some folks want to pick and choose their ancestors so that they can stay mad at their other ancestors for alledged misdeeds 400-years ago.

I hope you don't believe eating turkey was an English tradition at the time the English Loyalists moved to Canada! Turkeys are not an indigenous bird to the UK...
the only turkeys we have in these islands are bred commercially! We've only been eating them for about a century.

The Loyalists are the ones who lived in the American Colonies and remained loyal to England during the American Revolution. It wasn't just the English who fought against the Revolutionists but also the citizens who chose to remain loyal to England. I actually have Hessian ancestors who were hired by the British but switched sides and remained in the United States. The Loyalists left for Canada and the Thanksgiving Turkey tradition with them.

Star, thanks for posting this blog... so true. I also found a site that shows the difference between the Canadian & the US Thanksgiving (I have celebrated both in the past). Ours is today but I had dinner at my son's yesterday with about 15 guests in total (included some of my daughter-in-law's family). Both my son & grandson did the cooking (grandson has really become interested in cooking, so it seems). Today I had other relatives for lunch. So it's been a full 2 days. Tomorrow begins a change of diet!
Happy Thanksgiving to all Canadians!

An interesting read about Canadian Thanksgiving. The CFL doesn't always have games on over the Thanksgiving weekend. The grey cup is scheduled for November 24th in Calgary, Alberta. There were a number of NHL games on over the weekend. I watched a game between Vancouver Canucks and Philadelphia Flyers over the weekend. The Canucks beat the Flyers in overtime.
