Addicts-This world is FiretrUCKING insane!

I went to the local Step Meeting tonight. I remember the leader when he first came in shaking and scared. He is in recovery for 21 years. There was a man who took a -month medallion. I remember his first meeting. I remember quite a few folks who came in and are now Step dignitaries.

I decided to drive to the local fast food place because I didn't feel like cooking anything tonight. There was a woman standing outside the door. My first thought, that woman has " addict" written all over her. She approached just before I entered and asked if I could take her somewhere. She said her husband was stalking her and she needed to get far as I would take her. "Let go NOW!" I told her and we got in the car. I suggested the local Women's Shelter and started to drive in that direction.

The woman was quite the motormouth and I suspected the original assessment of "addict" probably "meth" was correct. I suggested that she the Women's Shelter in advance, She said her husband shut the internet off on her phone and she didn't know the . She expressed concern that he would track her down at the shelter. I suggested that she get someplace safe of the cold and figure the next move the next day.

We arrived the parking lot where the shelter was. I dialed the shelter on my phone. The Night Manager told her to back the next day. FiretrUCK!!! That woman made the red flag list. Addict or otherwise, being stuck in the cold is not a good scenario and I certainly didn't want to deal with her.

Luckily we found her sitting in a truck so I let her and headed home. I am sure that the has a better handle on what is going on with the . I listened to her enough to know that I wasn't getting the whole story. I don't even know her name. My suspicion is that she needs to go to Crosswinds for detox and Beckley for long term rehab. Although my problem was Vodka versus Recreational Chemicals, I might see her in a Step meeting someday.

There were so many red flags screaming at me. Some of the things she talked about happened to me when I was experiencing domestic violence.

I've had the experience of helping women in similar situations, but that was quite some time ago.... back when I personally felt safer out alone after dark. Please, be sure of your own safety in those type situations..... even if all you do is dial 911 and get someone to come pick her up to take her to safely.

I was definitely concerned about my safety tonight. Addicts are notorious liers. God and I were having a serious conversation. Later my thought was to simply call 911 and ask the police to figure out what to do with her. They have dropped women off at the shelter before and would have gotten a quicker response.

Hopefully she will get to the point where she figures out that her life is unmanageable with her in control of her life and that she does need to surrender. It's a very tough conclusion to come to though,

As far as your actions go, I get it and fully understand. I have done similar things without regard to my safety to help someone in need. A couple of 12 stepping situations come to mind. It's what people do but being more prudent probably is a good idea when anyone is in such a situation. I'm glad you are OK and pray that she does enter detox.

That sounds exactly like my ex mother in law number 7. Did she happen to be carrying a broke in half tuna rod and a Mongolian tattoo on the back of her left hand that showed half of tweety bird in Silvester's mouth?

Police departments are extensively trained to handle situations like that one. They know the ins and out of drug abuse, the shelters and help available as well as being fully armed and practiced in the art of self defense if needed.

One should always simply try to think of the reasons a person in the first place is in that kind of position?

Wedding ring? dialated eyes? Slurred speech? Exposed needle marks? homeless body odors?. Asking you if you are Dr.Livingston?

Oh about that fire truck being red. You would be red too if your hose was stretched across some street!

When I was in early recovery, I did quite a bit of 12 Stepping with wet drunks but addicts are a whole different balllgame. I couldn't do much for her except help get her out of the cold. Addict or not, it could be a serious situation in the winter. I had a friend who died of exposure when she was in active alcoholism. She was found face down, dead on the sidewalk of a church.

It has been my experience that sometimes people cross paths for a reason. I suspect that I will run into her again, hopefully under different circumstances. Next time, I will let the police handle it.
