Covid-19, Catch-22, & Walking Through Fire & Rain

There are several schools of thoughts this Covid-19 Pandemic . It can be a Catch 22. My feelings are mixed. There may be much ado about it but at the same time, I am a history buff.

We've have pandemics and plagues in the past. Yellow fever, Scarlet Fever. Small Pox, the Spanish Flu and the Black Plague which killed a third of the world's population. A large percentage of Civil War soldiers died of measles.

One school of thought will say "wear a mask if you care about the public safety of your fellow beings." The other school of thought will declare, "wear a mask and be a sheep who doesn't support the Constitution."

One youngster indicated that I must be an old lady cowering in fear and isolated in her apartment because I choose to wear a mask. That is not quite true.

I am part of that vulnerable population and much closer to the end of life's journey than the young lady. I am also the essential volunteer in my senior apartment building. I transport some of these folks to the grocery store and medical appointments. We are in and out of each other's apartments consistently and watch out for each other. I walk right up to the fire but I do it with caution. Social distancing and a mask when social distancing is not practical.

I was also the essential volunteer when we had our floods a few years back. The power was out and there was no running water. I went out, found water, filled jugs and found other necessities to take to homebound seniors.

When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. Isaiah 43:3

Nevertheless, I am not going to jump into a river full of copperheads or handle a hot pan without a potholder. God gave us brains to use.

Good for you Starwomyn you are a keeper. Keep doing your good works. People like you and Kofla deserve our claps every night at 7 PM. That is my thing during Covid-19 to raise the spirits of the front-line workers.

Excellent, Star. I wish I could be as active to help as you are, but with my own limitations and taking care of Joe, I just can't. But I can help in other ways, and I do.

I am certain that taking care of Joe is a full time venture. All I have is me. Luckily I have become family with some of the folks in this building. I remember the floods when the whole community was devastated. I wanted to be one of the ones helping to clear out and rebuild the neighborhoods. I don't have the physical capacity to do it. It turned out that making sure a few homebound seniors had water made a difference for them. Now I just take folks shopping and to medical appointments because our public transportation for them is out. I am blessed to be have the resources. Life isn't about me. It's about we.
