Spiritual Intoxication & the Man in the Family Afterwards Maybe I should be giving some of these religious nuts a break. They find something so wonderous that they want to share it with everyone else to the point of pushing it on them. I've been there but grew out of it. I remember my late husband who grew up Catholic. He endured abuse at the hands of a nun in Catholic School. He told me horror stories about "Sister Natalie." She told him that he would amount to nothing. Later, he went to visit her when he got his Electrician Journeyman Card. Grumpy was against all forms of organized religion and spiritual beliefs UNTIL I started going to NA Sweat Lodges and exploring Pagan aka early European spirituality. He became zealous to the point of becoming a pain in the azzzzzz. My older joked about an old man waving a stick in the air. Nevertheless, for someone who has NO spiritual connection, it was an improvement. I joined a NA group and he joked about having feathers on his kilt since I am the one with the NA ancestry. I never told him that it was the Scotts who wore kilts not the Irish. He wouldn't join me in the Sweat Lodge but he did help the Firekeeper. I have been thinking about some of the recent "Jesus" blogs and comparing them to the man in the Family Afterwards. I just realized that Old Grumpy was going through that experience too. Assume on the other hand that father has, at the outset, a stirring spiritual experience. Overnight, as it were, he is a different man. He becomes a religious enthusiast. He is unable to focus on anything else. As soon as his sobriety begins to be taken as a matter of course, the family may look at their strange new dad with apprehension, then with irritation. There is talk about spiritual matters morning, noon and night. He may demand that the family find God in a hurry, or exhibit amazing indifference to them and say he is above worldly considerations. He may tell mother, who has been religious all her life, that she doesn't know what it's all about, and that she had better get his brand of spirituality while there is yet time. Those of us who have spent much time in the world of spiritual make-believe have eventually seen the childishness of it. This dream has been replaced by a growing sense of purpose, accomplished by a growing consciousness of the power of God in our lives. AA Big Book - The Family Afterwards |

Grumpy also told me that he always wanted to go to a clothing optional beach but he didn't know where they were until I showed him where they were.

Chuckling here..... I know what you are saying. At our church, we often said that a new Christian ought to be locked in a closet for a few months until they come down off that high. But there is a difference between that spiritual high and just trying to shove your beliefs down people's throats. Christianity needs to be lived so that others might be drawn, not shouted so that they are chased away. You and I are a great example of two people with totally different personalities and life experiences who have become friends and focus on what we have in common, not what we don't. My pastor used to often tell us, concerning various denominations, that we can build relationships based on what we have in common, our belief in salvation by Jesus, and not worry about the other things in our various doctrines. I think that is a good philosophy to have in life when relating to people of other faiths too. Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

Had to laugh when you mentioned the word "NUN". My grandson is spending a couple of weeks here with me and yesterday he was trying to tell me how when I was in school it was so easy. The kid has no idea how tough schools were when I was growing up. Anyway, I told him about the nuns and how mean most of them were, some were really sweet though, but I didn't mention those to him. When you go to a Catholic boarding school, there is no getting away from the penguins! As far as what people believe in, to each his own. I think of George Carlin's skit about God, though it was funny, it was kind of sad also. Sad because he believed in nothing. Very intelligent man though, making jokes about life and politics that really got people to thinking about what was really going on. "It's a big club, and you're not in it" opened a lot of eyes about our politicians and government. Even though I am no longer a believer in the Catholic faith, I still believe in God and creation.

Not only did Grumpy go to clothing optional beaches with me but it was his suggestion that we get married at a Nudist Resort. It saved on wedding dress and there was no place to pin a carnation on him.

I never thought that would ever happen but life has it's surprises.
