Sixth Annual Holiday Gala Ball

Last night was the 6th annual Holiday Ball at Old Jacksonport Courthouse, Jacksonport State Park, Jacksonport, AR. I have gone to the last 4, I believe. This year was better than last year, in my humble opinion. The band was The 52nd Regimental Band, which includes Chris Bliss, a fine musician who participates in Buckskinners' Rendezvous and Civil War reenactments. He played and sang a bit on his own, at the last Old Parker Plantation Festival. The two other musicians I was familiar with were a father and , last name Todd. The other gentleman I did not know and failed to get his name. My granddaughter and another young lady were "all a-titter" over Master Todd, the younger, who appeared to be much amused at their antics. I couldn't help but wonder if the groupies of that time were that different from the ones today.
I missed Ms. Mary, a familiar face at Civil War Events around NE AR. Ms. Mary is in her 70's or 80's and a lovely person. I always pass as much time as I can with her, whenever I see her. She usually oversees the butter-churning at Old Parker Homestead, as well as keeping from injuring themselves or somebody else on the steep, narrow stairs in the Old Faust home, which is the only 2-story structure in the little settlement. The Homestead is on Hwy 1 about 5 miles south of Harrisburg and is open on weekends this time of year for tours and Christmas shopping at the General Store. One of these days, I guess I'm going to have to talk to Ms. Parker about putting some of the things I make in there on consignment or however they take them.
Anyway, back to the ball. Ms. Mary was not there, but several other folks I know from those and other events were. There were several ladies in their hoop-skirts and ballgowns. My granddaughter and I don't own such, since we portray poor Cherokee-white widow and granddaughter, which is pretty much what we are in "real" life. The gowns were lovely and the gentlemen in uniform were as handsome as can be (especially those with white or gray beards). The music was dandy, and I got to dance a couple of box-waltzes, including the "broom-dance". I would have tried the Schottische if I'd been able to fine Granddaughter at the moment (she'd purloined her cellphone from my knitting basket and headed out back to check on one or two of her gentlemen). I didn't get to dance the Virginia Reel but I did take almost a roll of pictures. I deposited pictures for developing and disc from that and the Civil War Weekend at Old Washington, tonight & will be happy to share them with anyone who's interested in such passtimes.
