Remembering

Bible in a Year:

1 Chronicles 25–27

John 9:1–23
Greater love has no one than this: lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

John :

John :9–
Memorial Day, I think of many military veterans but especially my dad and uncles, who served in the military during World War II. They made it home, but in that war hundreds of thousands of families tragically lost loved ones in service their country. Yet, when asked, my dad and most soldiers from that era would say they were willing give their lives protect their loved ones and stand for what they believed be right.

When someone dies in defense of their country, John :—“Greater love has no one than this: lay down one’s life for one’s friends”—is often recited during the funeral service honor their sacrifice. But what were the circumstances behind this verse?

When Jesus spoke those words His disciples during the Last Supper, He was about die. And, in fact, one of His small group of disciples, Judas, had already left betray Him (:18–30). Yet Christ knew of this and still chose sacrifice His life for His friends and enemies.

Jesus was willing and ready die for those who’d one day believe in Him, even for those who were still His enemies (Romans 5:10). In return, He asks His disciples (then and now) “love each other” as He has loved them (John . His great love compels us sacrificially love others—friend and foe alike.

Reflect & Pray
Before we believed in Jesus, we were His enemies. Yet Jesus died for us. How can you honor and remember Jesus for His death on the cross for you? How can you sacrificially love others?

Jesus, we’re so thankful that You were willing die for us!

Yes, that verse can have so many applications. Jesus not only died for us, he took the punishment of hell for our sins. Our fallen soldiers, who died while in service, which we remember today.
But also, laying down one's life also can mean giving up our normal routine for the benefit of others. The service people who put their lives on hold to serve, and came home, very changed from the youngster who left is one instance. The people who take time out of their day to take care of others for no other gain than simply helping others are another example. We see spouses caring for their spouses, parents taking care of disabled children, children caring for aging parents, and people helping other people during this COVID mess.
Some are never noticed by anyone else as they do these deeds, but God sees them and their hearts.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.
