The Flame

Clockwise from top left is
1. A Flame of the forest tree in bloom.
2. A close-up of the blossoms.
3. A Flame of the forest flower showing the spotted standard.
4. A shot of the leaves from below.

This tree is located just outside the Taiping War Cemetery. The Flame of the forest can grow bigger and taller than that in the picture. Please take note of the light green pinnate leaves which looks like feathers and the umbrella shape of the tree. Also note that the scarlet blossoms are large and in bunches. The flower has an upright petal with white spots called the standard. Its function is to guide visiting insects to the nectar.
The tree has just started to bloom but you can imagine what it would look like when the tree-top is covered with the scarlet blossoms. Now close your eyes and imagine that you are driving in the countryside when you chance upon a forest, or a hill, dotted with these blooming Flame trees and you will realize why the tree is named as such.
