The Shoes on the Danube Bank

The Shoes on the Danube Bank is a memorial in Budapest to honour the Jews who were killed there by fascist militiamen during World War ll. They were ordered to take off their shoes (which were valuable items then), and were shot at the edge of the water so that their bodies fell into the river and were carried away.

However, in one shoe, life has returned.

Lee that is so interesting but also heartbreaking. Do you think those are the actual shoes, and that they've stayed in the same place all these years?

No, bijou. These are sculptures. The actual shoes were taken by those militiamen.
