Poll: Is Rosie the Riveter still our Maine Gal?

An example of the class warfare declared by members of The Lucky Zygote Club on the rest of us.

This is from “The Portland Press Herald” I have done a cut and paste. There are several links with background information I could not post in SFF.

March 25
LePage to remove
Labor Dept. mural

AUGUSTA — Maine Gov. Paul LePage has ordered the removal of a 36-foot mural depicting the state's labor history from the lobby of the Department of Labor headquarters building in Augusta.

In addition, the LePage administration is renaming several department conference rooms that carry the names of pro-labor icons such as Cesar Chavez.

LePage spokesman Dan Demeritt says the mural and the conference room names are not in keeping with the department's pro-business goals and some business owners complained.

The mural was erected in 2008. It depicts several moments in Maine labor history, including a 1937 shoe mill strike in Auburn and Lewiston and "Rosie the Riveter" at the Bath Iron Works.

The "Sun Journal" newspaper says some worker advocates feel the move is a "mean-spirited" provocation.

AFL-CIO: LePage plan to remove
Labor Dept. mural 'spiteful'
From staff and wire reports

AUGUSTA — Labor leaders described LePage's decision to remove the mural as "political payback" in a statement released this morning by the Maine AFL-CIO.

It's unfortunate that Governor LePage continues to pick fights with the working class in Maine," said Don Berry, president of the Maine AFL-CIO. "This is political payback, the opposite of putting people first. It's a spiteful, mean-spirited move by the governor that does nothing to create jobs or improve the Maine economy."

In an interview, LePage spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett said the governor wants the mural to be donated to the state museum or another appropriate venue.

"It is inappropriate for a taxpayer funded agency to appear to be one sided or the other," she said. "The Department of Labor works closely with employees and employers."

She said the Governor's Office has received "several messages" from the public complaining about the mural. She released an anonymous fax dated Feb. 24 that apparently comes from someone who sat in the Labor Department lobby.

"In this mural I observed a figure which closely resembles the former commissioner of labor," the person wrote. "In studying the mural I also observed that this mural is nothing but propaganda to further the agenda of the Union movement. I felt for a moment that I was in communist North Korea where they use these murals to brainwash the masses."

The fax is signed "A Secret Admirer."

Bennett also released a memo sent from Maine Department of Labor Acting Commissioner Laura Boyett that asks staffers for suggestions about renaming eight conference rooms, some of which are named after labor leaders

The fax is as phony as a three dollar bill and was obviously sent by an agent provocateur
The fax is genuine and was obviously sent by a well intentioned person
It is only a coincidence that the fax is laden with talking points of the reactionary right
An obvious example of class warfare psych-ops by members of the Lucky Zygote Club
If Governor LePage is correct our victory in WWII was due to left wing labor unions and we should all be ashamed

The Tea Party should refer to the latest Pew Research poll that shows only 19% of Americans view it favorably. If they continue to press their assault on middle class Americans they will continue to see their party become the shortest active political party in existence...and for good cause, I might add.

The rich cats had better understand that there are a hell of a lot more workers than bosses...we are angry and we are becoming more angry.

Excellent post Ricky.

Maine, "The way life should be"....after decades of liberal Governors the State like many others are sick and tired of the status welfare, business desructive quo and has elected a leader not a follower. Thanks for this post highlighting another hero of the TEA party movement. I grew up in a small town 17 miles south of Lewiston-Auburn and my Grandmother is from Woolwich just across the river from Bath, the new Governor is overwhelmingly popular.

Its time to start reading the Bible, It will scare the Hell out of you...

The Associated Press at 12:25 PM PDT today 3 25,2011 released a story telling where the mural is being relocated in Maine's largest city Portland. Rep. Ben Chipman initiated the move, saying it would keep it on public display. Governor Paul Lepage said he appreciates the history represented by the mural but he thought artwork in that building must display the departments goal of balancing intersts of both employees and employers.
Thank you for the update. You should be upset that the public funds spent are being squandered on an overt act of censorship.

Each and every person who loves free speech should send an email or us mail or call or take an action and tell LePage he is wrong. This is censorship; raw and ugly demagoguery and censorship.

You might take the time to read this from the Sun Journal. It seems to be at odds with your assessment of Le Page's popularity...unless you measure it as anything above 30%.

"AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul LePage is currently more popular among Mainers than Gov. John Baldacci was right before the election, according to an opinion poll released Monday. However, that same survey shows LePage isn’t enjoying much of a honeymoon with voters.

Those were some of the highlights from Public Policy Polling, a North Carolina-based firm that conducts surveys across the United States. The organization was active during the 2010 election, conducting several comprehensive polls that measured the governor’s race, as well as the popularity of Maine’s congressional delegation.

Over the last several days PPP has been releasing results from an automated survey of 1,247 registered voters taken between March 3 and March 6. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.8 percent.

The poll shows that 48 percent of respondents disapprove of LePage’s performance while 43 percent approve.

Skipper.. before you get your underwear all bunched up be reminded that I am speaking of the area of Maine that I am familiar with not the entire State.......When you get a speeding ticket from a state trooper he is not very popular with you but the trooper did the right thing......Congrats to the school from Tuscon for their upset win over the school from Durham NC.

60, please sit down and ponder this question:

Besides the obvious physical differences, what exactly is the difference between the censorship of Governor LePage removing the artwork and the censorship of theTaliban removing the two colossi of Buddha?

Ricky well the obvious difference is Religion. Labor is not a religion(although some think it is)its a factor of production. No better than Capital and natural resources......

Yes the Taliban are predominantly Muslim and the people in Maine are predominantly Christian, However, that is a superficial difference. Fundamentally there is no difference.

Both are censorship of public works of art.
Both are intended to eliminate all references to the previous hierarchy by the conqueror
Both serve as reminders to the conquered what will happen if you resist.

Biologically this is on a par with new male lions killing all of the cubs after taking over the den. Historically this is akin to the Salem Witch Trials and the Red Scares.

Is this the best we can do?

For your information and education, when you make a statement that doesn't contain a qualifier then it is to be interpreted as meaning what it says. The error in this instance is yours and the statement you made is in error.

You failed to address the question of why certain censorship is proper and other censorship is not proper. Censorship, by definition, does not contain conditions that you ascribe to it.

It either is censorship or it is not...sort of like pregnancy...you either are or you are not.

The dates of the articles are March 23 and 25, 2011. The survey you quote was conducted between March 3 and March 6 and is therefore not an accurately reflection of the full response to the actions of Governor LePage by the citizens of Maine to the announced censorship and squandering of state funds.

I would be most grateful if you were to keep track of this. The Lambda in Wisconsin has been an ever-growing groundswell by the most ruthless of voters: Mothers of school aged children. If the pattern holds in Maine both will match the pattern set in California when the reactionary right takes control of government. An avalanche of a backlash
