Tired of the BS

Michael Jackson.....
I am tired of this devil
I am tired of this stuff
I am tired of this business
So when the going gets rough

I ain't scared of your brother
I ain't scared of no sheets
I ain't scared of nobody
Girl, when the goin' gets mean

Protection for gangs, clubs and nations
Causing grief in human relations
It's a turf war on a global scale
I'd rather hear both sides of the tale
See, it's not about races
Just places
Faces
Where your blood comes from
Is where your space is
I've seen the bright get duller
I'm not going spend my life being a color

[Michael Jackson:]
Don't tell you agree with
When I saw you kicking dirt in my eye

But if you're thinkin' about my baby
It don't matter if you're black or white

I said if you're thinkin' about my baby
It don't matter if you're black or white

What does it mean.......It don't matter if you're Black or White?

HATE spills over from the glass half empty
Ignoring what's below for what's above
The underlying fate of a false humanity
As Hate is only defined.....
As the absence of LOVE.

Judge not..Lest Ye be judged.
The Fate of World.. is at your fingertips
When the glass can no longer be filled
When you can run.. but no longer hide
When you can act, and not expect to be acted upon.
Where HATE has no sides..
But In lieu of Love become it's justification..
And emptiness it's only fulfillment.

When the solutions..become the problem.
And winning or losing is just a mirage.

I discovered a new artist. going through You Tube..

Her name is Kina Grannis..

One song you've heard before. Elvis Presley. "Can't help Falling in Love".. she made it hers. Debut in the wedding in "Crazy Rich Asians".. listen to it first..
Then listen to "Fast Car".. a duet with her and Boyce avenue.
then listen to "The Scientist" with her and Tyler and Lyndsey.
the songs are amazing...

Then listen to her original...
"LOVE Anyway."....
It was my reason for writing this.. It's explain what I am trying to say.

Four songs.. listen to them.. You won't regret it. just put her name in on "You Tube" and bring them up.

She did a series "Behind the song" 10 songs ten stories..

her ideas touched me like no other.. how she writes her songs. how her life events create the songs. how she puts her feeling in things.. But the things are not her feelings. she discovers that latter through the words..many time the words are metaphors for only her.
When i write poetry.. I do the same things. .. I keep thinking people don't understand the metaphors that apply to words. She taught me...The word is not a metaphor.. it's personal. The word expresses MY emotion.. It's not a metaphor it's a replacement word for my feelings. I have a subconscious connection to that.. I write the words. in context of a overall meaning.. but it's not until I finish it and read it again.. that i discover. my OWN meaning. through words that individually have their own meaning to me. I don't think about it before hand.

I'm not familiar with the 'Behind the Song' series but I would find it interesting.  I listened to all four songs in the recommended sequence - I like her covers, especially 'I can't help falling in love' - I like the tempo.  I'm very much a Tracy Chapman fan and 'Fast Car' is among my favourite tracks.  Are you familiar with Chapman's debut album?  The Coldplay track was also a good cover choice although I think 'Yellow' would have been a good choice also.  Sometimes things begin to sound the same.  Apart from her Elvis cover, I liked 'Love Anyway' the most, and apart from being catchy/relaxed tempo, the simple lyrics ring with much clarity.

'Feeling that we are all the same
All of one heartbeat, different names
And we can love, love, love, love, love
Anyway'

The verse mirrors Michael Jackson's 'it doesn't matter if you're black or white'. I think I can appreciate (sort of) what you mean by metaphors being a replacement word for your feelings.

I was wondering if you would be interested in watching Talk Talk's (English band, 8o's and beyond) track 'Wealth' on utube.  It's important to select 'talk talk wealth andiewithanie 72K views 6:53 mins' as the video clip is in my opinion, central to the song track. Thank you

My choices were not so much about the songs.. they were about they way she performed them. Her duets are spectacular.. she is understated in all of them. In the Scientist.. she is singing background and you hear it, but don't know it.. That amazing. totally different than when she solo's it...... In "Fast Cars" she sings the song to the song and her partner.. It's not her signature sound. She is an amazing giving artist.... to the music. She captures the emotion.

Her song "Love Anyway"..expresses everything i feel about what happening now.. Why I can't agreed with either side. And the only how.. of "how do we can get to the other side of it"

"I woke to a bitter scene
The whole world was crumbling
I cried to the guileless moon

The Wolves came to comfort me
And just as I feel asleep..
I heard the wolves were crying too."

If we are all hurting these days
Maybe we need to find a way
if we can LOVE, LOVE, LOVE
Anyway"

Okay... I listen and I saw.. Then i proceeded to check some other stuff by Talk Talk...

I think they have an interesting sound...different , but really good..

But for me... words do matter..

In the video... the video overtook the words... In was like a silent movie soundtrack..
co-dependent.. some of their other music was much better.

I guess i'm too old now.. and don't have the inclination..to have to clarify the words.
when I was younger the music came first and clarifying the words just made it better. Now it seems.. I have to be hit with it all.. all at once..

"I think I can appreciate (sort of) what you mean by metaphors being a replacement word for your feelings".

Not in the sense...that I wrongly assumed, metaphor are universal.. The metaphor of words are not universal.. they are Personal.. they are different for everybody. The sky, the moon, stars, mountains, birds, dogs the ocean and sand and mermaids and unicorns and God....are metaphors, that different for different people.
I once thought it was all the same.

One's ability to tap into the personal metaphors in songs and poems.. gives it the meaning. There are clues withing the context.

In one of Kina Grannis other songs. in her "Behind the song" video.. she explains her favorite verse..
To paraphrase...She's on a mountain and an inescapable avalanche occurs.. Does she run away from it... trying to escape it.. or turn and face it.

It's her metaphor for an avalanche of emotions.. Do we run away to avoid it's danger.... or do we turn and face it.

From an emotional standpoint..... Bravery..... is... letting it happen.

In Behind the Songs their are ten of them from her first album. For some of her songs.. She gets personal.. They are about her growing up, her uncertainty, her being uncomfortable around people, her marriage. how she writes... her inability to have children, her 6 month spent in Indonesia under arrest.... It's amazing to hear talk through it. Then listen to the song.

First off, thanks for checking out Talk Talk's 'Wealth'. Yes, I understand you liked the way she performed the songs rather than just song choice. I agree, she captures the emotion but I prefer her solo performances over her duets. I understand understated which I like also but to me it was lost in her duets - they weren't 'bad' but they didn't touch me - perhaps I'm missing something or perhaps it comes down to personal appeal in the delivery of a said song? Apart from the catchy tune, I really like the lyrics in 'Love, Anyway' and the lines you quote above, descriptive and relevant. I don't have a way with words so please accept my limitations when trying to convey my thoughts.[/SIZE]

'when I was younger the music came first and clarifying the words just made it better. Now it seems.. I have to be hit with it all.. all at once..'I  can appreciate what you're saying about being hit with it all at once.  For me instrumental pieces can take me to ethereal heights but then so can words and voice - whatever moves me in whatever format is sufficient.  I could have selected another Talk Talk track but because your blog theme centred around love, 'Wealth' seemed a fitting choice.  Singer Mark Hollis' indistinct vocals on the track can be frustrating admittedly but his main focus was the emotion/atmosphere he wanted to convey along with the paring down of many words to sparingly succinct.  The haunting 'I believe in you' is my favourite track on the album, written by him for his heroin addicted brother who ironically died from a heroin overdose a month before 'Spirit of Eden' was released.  I find it extremely moving/hymn like.  The 'Wealth' video clip offers an eloquent intepretation of the song track.

'Wealth'

Create upon my flesh
Create approach upon my breath
Bring me salvation if I fear
Take my freedom

Create upon my breath
Create reflection on my flesh
The wealth of love
Bear me a witness to the years
Take my freedom

Create upon my flesh
Create a home within my head
Take my freedom for giving me a sacred love

'Song to the Siren' cover by the Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser is similar to that of Talk Talk's Mark Hollis in that the voice is used more to express an emotion rather than a focus on word clarity. The cover is haunting/bewitching.

Thanks for the metaphor breakdown and Kina Grannis summary; of her life experiences which helped shape/are reflected in her songs. Six months spent in Indonesia under arrest would have been a harrowing experience I imagine - maybe she made the most of her time in jail, striking up friendships with the local women (inmates)?   Different culture and language.  My own heritage is Dutch Indonesian (born in Sumatra and immigrated to Australia when six).

Many artist get defined by a single track..not just the one hit wonders song.. but the same track for different songs...Whether it's in the voice or the music. there is both a familiarity and similarity that is maintained.. Talk Talk is like that musically.. The sound...is pretty unique..but the performances are repetitive. my opinion of it doesn't matter doesn't change it.. it is what is.. I don't know who came first...but i would prefer the Talking Heads.
My selections for Kina Grannis wasn't about..everybody liking the songs...It was about her artistry as a vocalist and musicianship...She plays the piano, violin and the guitar and can sing anything and accompany anybody.. In her accompaniments..she's not the main song.. Shes the HOOK
Her songwriting, however, is stuck on the one track...

.. she does an original with Sam TSUI.. he wrote it. his songs have far more universal appeal. She does his duet, because she make his great song even better.. I still can't believe when i heard it.. It was never a BIG hit..
Listen to it and tell me if you agree..... It's Sam Tsui and Kina Grannis doing "Bring Me the Night" . Now I am talking songs not vocalists... Sam Tsui as a vocalist is pretty damn good too.

True; as you say, it is what it is.  On the mention of Talking Heads, I wandered off to listen to 'Once In a Lifetime' which I enjoyed  It's been a while - great track.

I appreciate your comments re Kina Grannis being the 'hook' in her duets. She does an excellent job.  I think she's lovely and although I'm not familiar with Sam Tsui or 'Bring Me the Night', I agree she brings a swelling richness/joy? to the song, beautifully complementing Sam Tsui's vocals. Tsui's rollicking piano chords are reminiscent of Vanessa Carlton's 'A Thousand Miles'.  I really like the song; kept playing in my head.

Have you heard of English singer/songwriter Gabrielle Aplin?  She also plays the piano and guitar.  I bought her debut album 'English Rain' (released 2013) on the strength of her cover of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's 'The Power of Love' - beautiful.  Songs autobiographical.  I really like her.  Has her own independent record label.  Perhaps you could check her out sometime. There's so much great/good music from different artists on offer which is exciting.
