I think real ladies know to leave more to admire by way of imagination.

Hi Karin: Interesting topic. After seeing Cher dressed up formally to go to the opera in the movie Moonstruck, I thought that's how everyone would be dressed there. I went to see Tosca in Toronto and luckily I didn't dress up too much because no-one else was either.

We have one woman in her 70s here who walks up and down the street dressed in a mico-mini skirt and platform heels, but other than her I never see mature women dressed like that, just a few teenage girls looking for attention.

I haven't attended a classical music concert in years, not since I was living in the UK. But at that time the gentlemen wore tuxedos and the ladies wore long fashionable gowns. I shudder at the very thought of a mini skirt at a concert.

In her mind she thought she was young enough to dress like that, but...her mind went too far back to realize she shouldn't dress like that at an opera or anywhere.

Just a thought...maybe she was going to Wal Mart after the opera and hoped to be a Wal Mart person and have her picture on the internet! Or...maybe off to the streets to recoup her admission price.

I have never seen an opera, maybe one day.....

When I was in my early twenties, I missed a number of great performers and performances because I was too poor to have the clothing 'I thought' would be necessary to attend and pay for the event too.

Although that lady must have looked very much out of place, from jeans to tiaras, wasn't it so great that you were all there to listen to the beautiful music!

I don't wear skirts any more. For women of a 'certain' age, probably no shorter than at the bottom of the knee cap seems right.

There is the full spectrum of styles worn by concert attendees here. I like to be comfortable and fortunately can be, either fancy or not. What else we'll be doing that evening pretty well dictates what I wear.
Your description of the particular lady cracked me up.

Excellent topic. How can we have such little self respect for ourselves by our dress and expect others to have respect for us?

Just this weekend someone in chat mentioned wearing a bikini. I said that a women of our age and at this stage in our lives should know better as to what is appropiate to wear. That would include at the beach or at the symphony.

Times have changed but I don't think they have changed that much. A lady knows, or should know what to wear and what is appropiate. Those that don't follow that standard maybe are not ladies so much. LOL.

Who knows what is right any more? We have so many rights now, that nothing is wrong.

When you went to your house of worship you wore your Sunday best. If your Sunday best was a suit and tie that is what you wore, if it was just clean cloths, then that is what you wore.

She sounds like a disaster. I think I would wear a long dress and as I cant wear high heels, I would find a nice pair of shoes with heels not too high (dont want to break my leg again)!

I wear anything and everything - depending on my mood and feelings that day and could give a rodent's posterior about what anyone thinks. As a told a friend who asked if I were dressing up for Halloween - Every day is Halloween for me. I figure I didn't get to be this old for nothing and I have earned the right to look as ridiculous as I want. As an aging artist I can pass it off as a combination of age and eccentricity. I remember my stint as a manager. I had a collection of high fashion suits with coordinated blouses, shoes and purse - I used to refer to them as costumes.

On a recent flight with my 2 daughters I commented about the old days when flying was a luxury. I remember getting on a plane dressed in a suit, stockings with the appropriate "foundation garments", heels, hat and gloves and coordinated purse. It was expected. Now it's yoga pants and a fitted top so I don't get pulled out for secondary screening (happened until I stopped wearing loose fitting clothes) and slip on flat shoes with a beat up leather backpack purse.

Karin it is like that everywnere. I havent been to a concert for awhile but the last time I went I recall the same thing. The days of getting dressed to the nines to go to the Symphony or an opera are long gone. You will note that alot of the male celebrities go to the awards dressed in jeans that probably cost a small fortune. Mini shirts on a 70 plus year old woman to me is just making a statement. They are not even fashion conscious just want to be noticed. There are ways you can be noticed and not in short skirts. That is my theory.

Opera attire in Calgary and Edmonton varies widely.

Tuxes and the corresponding ladies' attire are quite common, but I saw one young couple once who arrived in cycling clothes.

I tend towards the geezer uniform of blazer and slacks.

Cute comments..I have to say....I too really don't care what anyone else wears or what they think of what I wear...age seems to have given me the freedom to Dare To NOT Care...

You are a smart woman, I like what you have to say, always to the point and never overbearing. I think you are a great girl...
Ahhh thank you Karin you are so kind. Why beat around the bush. I try to be honest and call a spade a spade without being overbearing. Interesting topic judging by the number of comments that have appeared on here. I like discussions like this.

I tend to wear either Blue or Black Jeans to Church with a nice shirt and sometimes a Sweater. I loosened up my Church Attire somewhat after my Wife passed away but did on occasion wear Jeans while she was still alive. I usually caught a little flack from her but if our Daughter was there she took up for Dad. I know of one time that My Son In Law wore Jeans in support of me. It is My Belief that God does not care what you wear as long as you are in his House Of Worship.
