Gun Control

Commentary by,
Freedom "Fred" Perkins

Guns?.......... yes or no is the question........ with names like Perkins, Metcalf, Crockett, Southard, Smith, and a lot more..........coming from the back woods of Maine {another word for heaven} and all to often a fire arm meant that we were going to eat........... I say that we should keep guns. There has never been a gun that has killed any one..........I agree that a person could use a gun to kill some one, but the gun didn't do it the person using the gun did. It could be said that if we didn't have guns then a person couldn't kill some one with it. I would put it to you that a person could use a steak knife, bow and arrow, hammer, ball bat and the list goes on and on to include even a shoe lace. Let us look at another part of the same question. All of us law abiding folks are told to turn in our guns and we all do. Do you think for even a fleeting moment that all of the weapons will get turned in...........None of us believe that we all know that the "bad guys" are still going to have theirs. We might do well to remember the framers of our constitution. They had already been to war with their shot guns and hunting rifles our independence wasn't won by military guns but with what ever a Farmer had. The framers knew that it was critical that every man could own his guns and keep them if for nothing else but to protect us from our Government and of coarse from the criminal element. A few years ago there was in another country where the common people couldn't own a firearm so the people couldn't do anything about their situation....... the other power was the USSR and the ones with guns was the KGB. Let us not stop here we need to explore little bit further;

*FIREARM USE IN CRIME AND SELF DEFENSE
* In the United States during 1997, people committed 15,289 murders. The perpetrators used a firearm in 10,369 of these instances.
* In the United States during 1997, people committed about 7,927,000 violent crimes. The perpetrators used a firearm in about 691,000 of these instances.
* As of 1992, for about every 14 violent crimes (murder, , etc… committed in the United States, one person is sentenced to prison.
* As of 1992, average length of imprisonment for:

Murder 10.0 years
7.6 years
Aggravated Assault 3.4 years

CONSTITUTION
* In the Bill of Rights, the second amendment to the Constitution reads:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

* Gun control proponents have argued that the use of the word "people" in this Amendment, refers not to the civilian population of the United States, but to the State National Guard Units.
* Gun rights proponents have argued that the use of the word "Militia" in this Amendment, refers not to the State National Guard Units, but to the citizens of the United States.
* James Madison was responsible for proposing the Second Amendment and was one of three authors of the Federalist papers. The Federalist Papers were published in newspapers to explain, argue for, and support ratification of the Constitution.

* In Federalist Paper 46, James Madison argued that a standing federal army could not be capable of conducting a coup to take over the nation. He estimated that based on the country's population at the time, a federal standing army could not field more than 25,000 - 30,000 men. He wrote:

"To these would be opposed a militia amounting to near half a million of citizens with arms in their hands, officered by men chosen from among themselves, fighting for their common liberties, and united and conducted by governments possessing their affections and confidence."

When I first heard Charlton Heston say he wasn't going to give up his firearm that they would have to pry it from his cold dead hands. I thought just a little melodramatic,.............Well.......now I say the same thing.

Yes, you should keep your guns. It gives the world another thing to ponder when the subject of the US comes up.

contrary to popular belief guns do not kill people, people kill people and if a person does not have a gun they can always use a hammer, knife, bat, or what ever. It is entirely up to you whether you like guns or not but remember that people kill people

    Quoting  :

Larry,

I would never advocate the use of any gun with out safety first and security is a safety factor. I raised three children, and one is Mentally retarded, functions at the 2 1/2 to 3 year old level. I would not and did not put guns out where he could even think about getting the gun. While my children were growing up I did two things. Made my bedroom off limits is one but i also know children so in addition to off limits I would also lock the bedroom door.

I liked that you pointed out that a child could get the gun and hurt someone or themselves. I could say this same thing for most of what is under you sink at home, I do not mean you but many people have all kinds of chemicals under their sinks at home. Good response
