Sadder than the conditions those people find themselves, is to me the fact we have folks in our country who want to adapt the same system here..... in a country so much larger. If it doesn't work on a small scale, why would anyone assume it would work o a big scale?

For every negative story concerning socialized medicine there is also a positive story.

I have written in the past about our family's experiences with the medical system in Canada.

This summer I had a parathyroid gland removed which involved blood tests, nuclear scan, ultra sounds, doctor and specialist appointments, and an overnight in the hospital after surgery. Everyone involved was professional and very competent.

I'm very happy to have my tax dollars go to supporting our medical system. Through the whole process, I was never presented with a bill. My story is not unique.

How about posting comparative outcome data for the UK and US?

Thank you, Rocket, you said it better than I ever could. Kudos to you!!

This past Thanksgiving (Oct in Canada), I fell into my son's sunken dining room where we were just about to enjoy a very lavish meal prepared by both my son & his wife (they do things up big lol). There were 12 people there in total. Well my fall was worse than I imagined, although I saw blood everywhere!! Fortunately my son called 911 and in the meantime, my daughter-in-law's father (a retired fire chief) took command, asking everyone to bring wet cloths etc so he could apply pressure till the paramedics got there... yes he managed to stop the bleeding (I'm a great bleeder)! When the paramedics arrived they congratulated him & took me to the nearest hospital ER where they hooked me up to a monitor etc and that's when I learned I had a medical problem (I wasn't aware). My son & grandson arrived in their vehicle & stayed with me till I was released that night. Meanwhile the ER professionals had everything on their computer & sent the info to my own doctor in another burb but also sent me home with some medication. My doctor called me following the holiday & made an appointment for me to see her and also a cardiologist soon afterwards. Since then I've been on my first set of meds (first time in my life) and I appear to be doing quite well. Since I'm a senior, my meds were paid for and in no way was I handed a bill from anyone!! So yes, socialized medicine can and does work.

As a matter of fact, not long ago Bernie Sanders was in Toronto at U ofT to learn about the details. No idea where he plans to go with it though!!

Hey Fossil... from what I'm told and hear from those who are here (in Canada) from the UK, their heath care seems to be better than ours!!

Here's what if found so far on a US medical org website:

- UK residents have a longer life expectancy than the US
- Both nations have 'world class' health outcomes, but no detail was given
- UK health care costs are the lowest in the industrial world, and the highest in
the US.

Will try to find more.

- Illegals pay a variety of taxes- sales taxes, to name only one.
- Canadian taxes vary by province. Alberta, where I live, has the lowest, comparing
favourably with some US states.
- The Fraser Institute is a right wing org. You can expect it to always produce results
that suit its ideology. Try looking at the Parkland Institute for the leftie perspective.

Found some more info relevant to this matter.

From an article on the Forbes website:

- US ranks last in overall health care of 12 developed nations.
UK is no 1
Canada is 11 just ahead of the US

US ranks last in:
- Mortality amenable to medical care
- Infant mortality
- Life expectancy at age 60

Maisie oh by we DO have millions of illegals here, not paying taxes etc & our current Liberal government supports them before our seniors, veterans, homeless etc. The illegals & refugees (from 3rd world countries) are meanwhile put up in hotels etc. For example, in my province of Ontario, as of late, our locals have had to ask for donations (especially our mayor) to help offset the cost and our local armoury is now being used to house these less unfortunate Canadian citizens!! Yes, we do pay a lot of taxes but as Rentier explained, we are taxed both provincially and federally (some provinces more than others provincially)! However, the health premiums are not as high per family as you might think. For example, in Ontario a family of four is taxed at $750 per year. To me that's not a negative trade-off for the services we do get.

Millions of illegals?

Can you supply a source for that astounding datum?

Sorry but as of late, it's very close to millions!! Our 'open illegal' borders have allowed this through our government. Such borders exist in Quebec, Manitoba and BC. Having said all of that, at the rate we're going now, you can bet your booties that we will reach more than a million very shortly or hven't you heart about the El Salvadorians coming in very shortly!! It beats me and many other Canadians why the heck our government allowed those OPEN borders to stay open... the one Quebec (Lacolle), for example, made the decision to have the road in paved vs the dirt road they had previously!! How dumb is that?????

While there are a large number of diverse immigrant communities across Canada, the large majority are doing it the upfront legal way, complying with Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s requirements.

Exactly how large a problem illegal immigration is, was historically a matter of some guesswork as illegal immigrants don’t fill out census forms or line up to vote.

According to Professor Showler of the Refugee Forum at the University of Ottawa, the estimates for the total number of illegals in Canada range prior to this past year between 30,000 and 120,000.

Not as sorry as I am that you can't come up with a source for your assertion.

Yes, Rocket...but no doubt we've had another surge since August. Bear in mind, not all of them have yet been vetted etc. In addition, there has been a problem with housing them. At the same time, through this terrible freezing temps occurring in most places across the nation, Toronto (for example) have experienced problems housing our own, so much so that both the Provincial governments & local citizens have had to find other means of financial assistance for those people. What in fact I'm trying to explain is that I don't believe we should continue with the ongoing influx of illegals but instead should be closing all those ILLEGAL OPEN borders, allowing everyone to apply legally (the conventional / legal way) for entry to Canada. We also have foreigners applying who have been waiting for eons to be accepted!!
