Why I Don't Eas Sushi

I just can't bring myself to eat sushi or anything raw and fishy for that matter. However, Chuck loves the stuff along with oysters etc.

Today was his day. We went to the Malercon and stopped by the place that catches oysters and sells oysters on the spot. I drank a diet soda and tried to keep from gagging. When he was done I got the bright idea to keep some of the shells for my project. The vendor thought I was a little weird but was happy to oblige me.

When I got home I set them in the sink to soak before I cleaned them and put them out on the balcony to dry in the sun. I left them for a bit to put some of my purchases away. When I returned several long thin worms had crawled out from somewhere and were wiggling in the water.

Hope I don't have to take Chuck to the vet to be dewormed when we get home! Can't help but think of everything Anemac went through with her parasite.

I love raw oysters, honeybunz loves the Sushi.

Beachgirl has given you a great response and you should not have to worry about Chuck.

Now, growing up in the heart of the chicken industry I can tell you that oyster shells are crushed and feed to hens that produce eggs to make a stronger shell as they are 100% calcium.

I cannot understand ANYONE liking raw fish products, so really I shouldn't be commenting on this. So, NO COMMENT!

I have never eaten sushi but have seen it on the serving counter in the buffet restaurant we used to go to. Pretty but not for me. I cannot bring myself to eat raw fish. Tried fried oysters when I was a kid.......I still remember them and not about to eat raw ones!

I'll eat sushi if it's around, but I don't go looking for it. My son in Vancouver likes it, so we usually eat it at least once when I'm visiting him.

I ate raw oysters on the beach of one of the Gulf islands years ago. Didn't suffer any unpleasant consequences, but I prefer them cooked.

Thanks for looking this up for me. I had planned to do it today when I came to the Lobby to get on the internet. Fortunately your research told me what I had suspected - and hoped. In fact I jokingly told Chuck that if he are any they were likely just a bonus of protein.

Join the club on the gagging. Just thinking about raw fishy stuff does it for me.

Oh Lordy, you should not eat oysters in Mexico, if you can't drink the water....well, what does that tell you...I had Montezuma's reverence last time I came home from Puerto Vallarta, it stayed with me for months...Hope he is OK..
I don't drink the water in SoCal so definitely don't drink it anywhere. Have been lucky as I have lived in some pretty rustic places and never gotten sick.

Local treatment for Montezuma's revenge is a 3 day course of Cipro. Works for everyone I know that had the problem.

On a funnier note - I had Montezuma's revenge symptoms before we left home and was just recovering the day of the flight. I joked that you were suppose to bring it home from Mexico, not bring it to Mexico.

Funny you should mention the chickens. Chuck asked me why the vendors would take them back etc and I explained the chicken feed use to him. My grandmother always used this for the chickens.

Never tried fried oysters - clams yes but never oysters. I imagine they would be pretty much the same.

I don't know of anyone actually getting sick from eating raw seafood . For me it is just the texture and fell that I can't handle.

All sushi does not contain raw fish! This is a common misconception.

I won't touch the raw fish sushi either. There are more vegetarian/cooked sushi options than raw - which I love, i.e.....

California roll - cooked crab or pollock with avocado

Dynamite roll - deep fried prawn with avocado

Avocado roll - rice and avocado

Alaska roll - smoked salmon with cream cheese

Veggie roll - celery, avocado, carrot

Kappa roll - cucumber and rice

Honeymoon roll - California roll with hot sauce

Tropical roll - California roll with mango etc. etc....

And that's only the start. Everyone should try these delectables. They are healthy and delicious!

Glad to know there are so many options. I have tried California role - it's OK but I prefer other fish dishes. There is also some cooked eel stuff I tried once but the flavor was too strong and way to greasy for me.
