Offended by Merry Christmas????????

Today I heard someone object to another person saying “Merry Christmas” It is hard for me to believe that people are offended by the term. I am a Pagan but am happy that Christians give me their good wishes. I do not care what you call the occasion. I appreciate being included and thought of. My belief system is not picky. We believe that each individual should follow their own path and do not judge others for their choices. We appreciate and return good wishes and kind thoughts no matter what form they come in.

I have always celebrated Christmas because it is an important day in the culture I live in. It’s fun and uplifting (the food and socializing aren’t bad either). I also celebrate Christmas with you for what it symbolizes – light in the darkness and hope. I’ll celebrate this with anyone in any form. I do my own spiritual rituals on solstice and celebrate Yule and welcome anyone who chooses to join me.

In return for being wished Merry Christmas I will return the wish with enthusiasm and meaning because we believe that any kindness should be passed on three fold.

I agree with both you and mrsjoe. Some people are just Miserable humans. Sad really. I wish anyone that chooses to enjoy the season "Happy Holiday".

I agree with your attitude, I believe we are all related and rejoice in all religion convictions and holidays. If a person is happy then I am happy for them. Merry Christmas.

Hi Spirit: I'm not a Christian, but I send out Christmas cards with a picture of a reindeer or a Winter scene on them and say Merry Christmas to people. Words and phrases change over the years I guess, because the only time you hear the word 'merry' anymore is at Christmas. No-one ever says they're 'gay' anymore either unless they're talking about being homosexual. lol

I still wish people, Merry Christmas and always get it returned, even a mumble from the clerks at Wal Mart.

I don't send out Christmas cards but I do try to write a short story what had happen in my life this year (sorta news letter) in email to all my friends. With the coast of stamps and ect many people have quit send cards. Christmas is my favorite holiday for many reasons. One is our Savior was born whether
it was not in the fall or in December. Two, sometime it is the only time some family all get together and finally I love to see all the pretty decorations and remember all the goodtimes in the past.

So Merry Christmas to everyone who reads this and have a great time.

You are so right. These are likely the same people who chose to turn everything into an argument. Their Schroogness extends far beyond Christmas. Guess they all want us to be as unhappy as they are. They need to loosen up, tie one on, dance on the bar and smile and laugh for a change. They just might like it.

Well put - a positive attitude extends far beyond the Christmas in Merry Christmas.

Very much noticed and appreciated knowing it comes from one who had difficulty with the holidays no matter what name you give them. To you I will send some energy for peace and tranquility.

Spirit, I agree with you and Ms Joe. Some people just want to attack for any reason they can find. For me, the Christmas story represents the coming of the light bringing with it hope. It is a tradition found in most cultures and this time of year has been celebrated for that reason way before Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Therefore, even though I call myself a follower of Jesus, I wish everyone a Merry Christmas. May you have a season full of joy, good friends, family and good times. May you be blessed by the lights, the decorations, and the sounds of the season. Lastly, may you find a measure of peace in your heart and body, no matter who or what you believe in.
You are correct. The concept of what Christmas represents comes from well before the birth of Christ and can be found in all ancient religions. My opinion is becasue it i so closely connected to the natural cycles of the year and cycles of life. It is the promise that the light always returns in spite of how cold and dark it may be in the moment. We need to remember this all of the time but the Winter holidays are suppose to serve as a wake up call when we forget.

I know you are working towards this goal. May the spirit of the season lift your spirits. Spring and summer will follow.

Maybe becasue if you take the original meanings of merry and gay people have forgotten the concept.

Oh no, I've forgotten to include Festivus symbols in my multicultural decorations. I need to add a coat rack or is it just a pole to the collection. Gigging here thinking of most of the people around here's reactions as I doubt many of them have heard of Festivus, let alone recognize it's symbolism. It it's a pole I need I'll have to find a way to keep the pole dancers off of it or we may all end up in custody for the duration.

I think many of us have settled for the electronic greetings since that is how we communicate these days. Even personal e-mails are fewer and fewer. We tend to send one to an entire group. The younger folks go even further - a post on FB. Changing times, changing customs but the meaning remains. I recently got a calligraphy pen set for "fancy" things I often do for my art projects of certificates from my spiritual practice. Actually writing anything is a lost art.

Although my family is close and gather often our Christmas celebrations are among the best - second only to Thanksgiving but these days it is all being rolled up into an extended time period. It's just a great time for us and should indeed be called a Merry Christmas"

sw,

I don't get it. Why would that someone get offended? I am not a Christian but have been greeted with wishes of Merry Christmas many times and I think it is nice of these people. Would anyone get offended if I greet him with Gong Xi Fatt Chai?

Not me for sure. That greeting bring back fond memories of Chinese New Years in China Town NYC. My best friend was Chinese, Her BF Jewish and me American so we used to tell people we loved it becasue it gave us a reason to celebrate New Years 3 times.
