Yule Log - Finished Product

I didn't think I would get this done this fast but everything went well and I finished around dinner time. The wood chiseling went well once I figured out that is is like splitting a log - go with the grain. I thought I would have to go into town to get things to decorate it but I had almost everything I used. Only had to add the 2 small potted plants on the right.

Tomorrow I get to clean up the mess I made before the grands come over Sat. for Tamale day.

Good job, when are you going to light it??

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Beautiful!

Grandparents never had one that pretty, theirs way rather plain.

Keep trying. It gets easier. Being naturally creative I always had ideas but materializing them does take practice.

And at the moment too much excess energy. Hope the cat keeps moving or I might turn him into something special!

Not sure. Tradition is Christmas Eve but originally. There could old times there could be several Yule logs burned if there were several gatherings. Obviously a tradition European in origin.

Most are much simpler. I got some ideas from one of my spiritual websites then took off from there.

The Yule Log is pretty easy compared to other kinds of decorations. Another thing is to make or buy a large pretty wreath , hang it on a blank wall and put wrapped presents under it. Add an inexpensive poinsettia plant and there you have a festive corner.

You're welcome. Interestingly I had the candle tucked away for a couple of years and never fount the right setting to use it. The berries are from some sort of invasive bushes that grow in the back yard. They were here when I arrives so all I have ever done is keep them trimmed back. This is the first year they have produced berries at the right time of year for me. Usually the berries are done by the holiday season.

That sounds different. Ceramic is OK but for a minute I envisioned plastic critters!

Spirit, I like the Yule log and admire your creativity. In my sculpting days, I never could get carving with the grain right. However, the thing that caught my attention was your mention of tamale day. The day you all get together and make tamales, right? Oh, how I want to learn to do that. I so miss the homemade tamales one of mothers of a student at my old school used to make and sell on Fridays. Everytime I make a batch of chili, I think about those tamales. Have a good time making them tomorrow. I can taste them from here.
It is a lot easier to split wood with the grain than carve. I usually break off a larger piece than I wanted.

Just finished tamales - over 200 between the 4 of us (oldest grand daughter joined in for a while). If this weren't such a hectic time I sould bring you some, Maybe after the holidays.
