You Only Had One Job

This morning I filled in for my getting her 8 year old up, dressed, and fed and to school. Should be a piece of cake for someone who raised 5 so spread out in age I had one heading to his sophomore year of college at the same time as one was starting kindergarten.

I am not a morning person. I can get up at any time and take my body wherever it is needed but the brain doesn’t wake up until 10 AM. Getting up at 4:30 to get to her house no problem – being awake enough to do anything is another story.

The little guy woke up on his own before I had my coffee, all smiles and enthusiasm because “Nonie” was there. I forgot how their mouths, eyes and feet are connected. If their eyes are open their feet are going and the feet are directly connected to the mouth. Much more stimulating than my elderly lazy cat that never makes a sound unless his food dish is empty.

Follow the written procedure (my is obsessive about structure). PB&J with crusts cut off done, exact number of apple slices in baggie, juice box in lunch container and placed in back pack with last night’s homework. fed prescription of instant breakfast (chocolate milk as far as he is concerned), banana and a treat today – a pop tart which he likes cold. All done while he insists on demonstrating his latest IPad app. Such a fun game at 7 AM – a screen full of virtual buttons that make sounds like police sirens.

His clothes were all laid out ( does this a week at a time). He is outgrowing his pants and needs help getting them snapped. I asked what he was going to do when he has to go to the bathroom at school. He didn’t seem concerned. Drive him to the nearest parking place to school and walk him about a block. When we get there the are lining up. Someone blows a whistle and I tell the “there is the bell. Let’s get you in line”. A little girl sets me straight. It’s a whistle, not a bell and it is a notice that the “big ” are doing something they are not supposed to, not a signal to line up. However, the other are lining up and their parents are leaving so I do the same.

Back to the house and coffee. My in law arrives so we sit down and relax for a chat. By 11 Am the school calls. Justin is at the office. We need to bring him a belt or take him home! Yup, he is outgrowing his clothes. He is a very slender as were my and the rest of my grandchildren; only in his case he has no hips or butt to keep his pants up - plumber’s crack. His dad and I decided he could come home for the day. I’m off to the stores to get the poor little guy some bigger pants. I will sew elastic inside of the waist band to keep them up (hopefully)

I’m back home now wondering how I ever managed to get 5 and a husband fed, dressed and out the door and myself to work before 8 AM every day.

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Unfortunately I had to face that as well as the fact the past few years of living without kids in the house made me lazy.

An honest man! The younger generations are less role oriented but in our time this is exactly how we did things.

I guess this is why the local feminists saw me as a role model. I never intended to be, just took care of what fell my way, one day at a time.

Sure does. I will stop complaining that life is too dull some days.

Call me a glutton for punishment. I only have 2 birth children. 2 were stepchildren that I raised and one was adopted. I always wanted a large family (I'm Italian) just had no idea how they would arrive.

I never fussed much about what the kids ate. My husband had a farmer's appetite so I always cooked full well balanced meals but we had plenty of ice cream cookies and goodies as well as some of whatever snacks they wanted. They are all slender, except for my older son and he is just a big guy (6'3") but not heavy. I figured if I didn't make a big deal of food they would not develop unhealthy attitudes about it. That and genetics worked well.
