A Witch Defined

Today's blogs contained a reference to "witch" in the terms our Christian dominated society, popular media and the fun we call Halloween present it. Please do not misunderstand. Although using the term witch in the popular sense would be the equivalent of calling a preacher a demon, I was not offended. Like Dan stated the other day regarding his beliefs, I take the opportunity to share mine.

I share and enjoy witch jokes and cartoons and even though I hate to admit it have, at times, taken advantage of the stereotype by threatening to turn someone into a frog with no hopes of ever becoming a prince. I also confess that I have a time or 2 used the fear the witch stereotype instills in some to keep some away from me. This "fear" or negative beliefs reflected back is the only power I really have over others.

I accept his popular concept of witch is part of the culture of the country I CHOOSE to live in. However, for anyone who has an open mind and would like to understand better please read through the following. It is brief but sums up

We also serve our communities as healers, teachers and counselors. Many of us are spiritual leaders like a Christian pastor. Legally, many lik e myself are recognized as ordained ministers.

Glad to have the opportunity to educate. I stayed "in the boom closet" for many years partially from wanting to fit in and partially because of unreasonable fear. Stregaria, which is what I follow focuses on helping and healing. It is sometimes called hereditary witchcraft as it runs on families. My Italian grandmother was a Strega. Interesting that although I am the only one who became a spiritual practitioner ALL of the women and a couple of the men in the family are on health care or teaching occupations.

Thank you for the kudos. I remember one fellow who insisted I was going to "burn in hell." he never got that I consider the human existence as being as close to hell as it gets so if I would indeed burn in hell he was already there along with me.

The gaining popularity of Wicca is doing much to call attention to what Paganism is all about. You are correct. Believing in something larger than ones self is essential. Sometimes that is as simple as being in amazement of a sunset or watching human life unfold on terms of watching a baby grow and mature. We are such a small part of the Universe yet the center of our own.

If I had to think I was the final say so on everything I would be constantly depressed and despondent over how badly I am messing up.

Our belief system is really very simple - not necessarily all of the hockus pockus many think it is. Of course there are those who need the rituals to focus energy so they accommodate this in various ways. You could probably equate it to the vast variety of Christian practices and rituals there are to assist in focusing.

It is - that is why my favorite place on earth is at the lake with nothing but nature and of course in my gardens or on the beach.

I think we all have a special place (or places) which makes our heart sing and seems to have the rhythm we move to.

The first time I felt it was descending Anarchist Mountain into Osoyoos, British Columbia. My whole being exhaled and went, "Ahhhhhh....."

You are correct about the confusion. A member here commented to me once "why even mention god when you do not believe in him." I suppose if a person only sees one way ( their way of course) to recognize a higher power that would be true - for them

That sounds like an amazing experience. Nothing quire as humbling as a majestic place on nature.

Thank you. If anyone from any belief system lives according to their teachings about love, kindness, forgiveness you should not see any noticeable difference.

Nothing is a better demonstration of the power of creation or as many call it, god, than nature.

Sounds wonderful. I haven't been to the new jersey shore on maybe 40 years but remember some good times spent there.
