My Pi Baby

My oldest granddaughter turned 14 today. While she is a typical temperamental teenage girl in many ways this is a NERD.

She has always been at the top of her class and was extremely upset the one time she didn't get all A's on her report card. You would think the world was in crisis the one time she got a B+.

She excels at math and is in honors classes. One year another student scored a point or 2 higher than she did on the math achievement test. She was horrified. Not only was she not the top scorer, a BOY out did her.

Last week she returned from a school trip to Washington DC and NYC. Most of the did not go to school the day after the returned. Not mine. She was concerned that she had been gone for a week and there is a science test coming up.

Recently she turned down a band trip to Disneyland but was over the moon about having been selected to represent her school in a program sponsored by the local military base. Each school selects a team to represent them. The teams come up with a project and work with the engineers at the navel weapons research lab in competition. Of course her school took first place. We probably couldn't have lived with her if they didn't.

We've always wondered where this one came from. Her father is good at math and has had primarily technical jobs but nothing exceptional. The rest of us? Thank god for calculators and bill pay programs . We have strengths and interests in things like art, literature and human services. Not a scientist among us. We do have a couple of RN's but that is close as we get.

This morning she sent us a text saying that she is a Pi baby. Not only born on 3-14 but at 9:26 PM. Fate, destiny, astrology, numerology or just coincidence this explains it.

I'm sure you're very proud of your granddaughter, Spirit. The only thing is that she has to realize that in life, she won't always be first. It's a hard pill to swallow for overachievers but one that she will eventually have to learn.

Wonderful, a proud grandmother, good for you.

The US Government Printing Office has numerous books listing thousands of kinds of jobs with their description as well as education and qualifications.

Many of the actual printed books are free. They also have electronic books on line. If you or her parents are interested in taking a look and find out what area she may have an interest in looking at.

Back in the late 60's I got a free book for my children which was about two inches thick and the size of a Sears & Roebuck Catalog listing every job you could think of.

That is a good idea. Since her father id a disabled veteran and a California residents she gets tuition to any California state college or university paid so she has been focusing on that but military might be a good idea. Several career military in the family and she herself was an army brat so it fits well.

That is something we have been trying to get her to understand but she is so naturally competitive it's a tough lesson.

Indeed we are. My sister has twin daughters who are much the same. She and I joke that these youngsters are the kids my dad wanted but he ended up with me and my sister. It took a couple of generations longer to get the kinks worked out.

Thank you. Hard to believe but these kids today just go on line and do the research. This one was interested in becoming a CIA agent a few months back. Researched it and had all of the info in place right down to the college curriculum needed to become an agent as well as what careers she could prepare for in the process so she could have a good cover. Even harder to believe that at 13 they think things through that far.

We are. There is so much negative press about young people who mess up it is so uplifting to be part of the lives of those who are on the other side of the coin.

I'll share a laugh with you. My parents were army air corps (her great grandparents ), my husband army, other grandfather navy, my step father marines and her father and his sister army. Just imagine the competition should she decide to go military.

She definitely is the kind of young woman who would do well in a military career.
