I Still Need My Treats

I had my regular blood draw done today. This is always amusing becasue most places try to make you comfortable by asking you what is wrong or why you are there. I have no real reason other than it's routine. Same when I make my 6 month doctor's follow up appointments. I always tell them "Nothing, just old and crazy".

My blood work requires fasting, which is important since diabetes runs in my family. Although I have had no related issues it is important to keep an eye on this especially at my age. Fasting is not a problem for me since I get up late and usually do not eat anything before noon to 2 PM anyway but when I am told I have to do it I feel deprived.

Where does this illogical come from? In my case it seems to go back to childhood and the many doctor's appointments my mother drug me too while trying to identify and deal with ADD. Little was known about it at the time and even less could be done to treat it. I must have been one of the first "lab rats" for this one. I also needed frequent doctor visits for constantly reoccurring sinus and ear infections.

Like all I did not want to go to the doctor's and like all parents my mother used the reward system to try to make things better for me. After each visit we would go to the local drug store which had a lunch counter and have chocolate ice cream sodas. She loved sweets and loved chocolate more so this was likely as much or more of a treat for her as me.

Fast forward to me as the great grandma taking my inner to the doctor. The demands her treat. I'm back home but not without a stop at the local donuts shop for a huge, greasy, sugary jelly doughnut which will take the place of a sensible protein shake lunch / breakfast.

I get the frequent lab checks too because I have two primary care physicians, one via Medicare and one from the VA. I seldom fast for the blood work since they are just going to compare the results with my previous tests and I didn't fast for that one either. Once the baseline is established I am good to go.

[SIZE 3 Mine have always been fasting probably because I need to watch for diabetes. I am the only one on my dad's side not to develop it and to make it past 40 and still have a gallbladder. Things probably won't stay that way though if I keep eating jelly donuts

I hate needles and blood tests, especially the fasting tests because I get up around 2:00 a.m. and the lab doesn't open for hours. I only have one vein left and it moves when it sees a needle coming, so blood tests are always a challenge. Good luck with your results Spirit and I hope you don't get diabetes.

Chuck has been on Warfrin and the INR monitoring since his first heart surgery and will be on it for life. The home monitoring equipment is very costly and the lab is free and it gets him out of the house, which is a side benefit. He usually goes in the AM and gets an Eggs McMuffin after. That is his idea of a treat!

Wait until you need to be on regular meds. Your body is always being recalled. If you don't go, no meds, no meds - problems return. . Routine blood work is the best way to keep an eye on how our aging systems are doing.

If it is truly ADD puberty won't help. You don't out grow it. It just manifests differently. Some of us were fortunate enough to develop manifestations that didn't get noticed. Many people like me and a good friend who is an orthopedic surgeon figured out how to cope on our own because we were super motivated to achieve specific goals and had better than average IQ. Unfortunately those who do not have these plus the family support needed do not fare nearly as well.

Needles are not a problem for me. Just today I was commenting to the phlebotomist how much things improved since the days of multiple use dull needles.

Very interesting research. Might explain how I managed to evade diabetes. I lived primarily with my maternal grandparents and mother.

I think I've said this before, but I'll repeat it for fun cause I'm a senior and I can .....

Went to the doc and told him all about my medical problems, cancer in my family etc while he was cutting out a few out of my back with a local. All he said was, "Dont worry about it, something's gotta kill you." I laughed so hard for a sec he had to stop. Funny thing was the truth of it relaxed me.

Judgment Day will be interesting - and all paths lead there.

I agree with making it as painless as possible. Also enjoying as much as possible along the way - hence the jelly doughnut. Not an everyday thing for certain but we all need to indulge once in a while.

So true. I remember seeing a young doctor a few years ago who went on and on about the necessity of all of the things I chose not to do. I ended up telling her "something will get me one of these days. At my age probably sooner than later and it will likely be one of the things we have already identified but today is not the day."

I remember my dad having one of these for the same reasons. I'll bet you are more than ok with going back to being picked.
