Toilet Paper

Yesterday was my regular "work day" spent at my house dealing with my / residents household issues. My challenges included revisiting the toilet paper war. Seems some of them hoard it and others use excessive amounts and do not replace their fair share. Today I read through blogs and found some of the flying insults just about as significant.

This led to an ADD thought tangent about toilet paper. It a vital item for almost all of us but is a relatively recently and pretty insignificant item in the development of the human race. Even today there are many cultures that have alternatives to toilet paper. Anyone who travels to other countries has some funny stories to tell about toilet paper. Please feel free to share.

Letting my mind wander further I could not help but wonder what was used as toilet paper in medieval times. What did the native Americans use? What did Cleopatra do? No disrespect intended but I wondered what did our religious icons, Jesus, Buddha, Mohammad etc do?

So many questions....................

Great subject BTW! An improvement on the drive-by shootings here today. It is common knowledge 'the prophet' used his left hand. A custom to this day. Us lefties would be looked upon with scorn while eating! I like the Costco TP, and Paper Towels (not for that!!!!). Great TP & PT in value and quality. I have also used a 'Bidet' in Japan and the Middle East. Interesting. I have also used a hole in the floor, with partitions and a hose. I have also used my left hand in a strip club in Guam which ran out of TP. We have all gone in the woods, or along the highway... TP is like other things, Having it is great! Not having it is a huge issue.

I have used all those posted above. The most important thing to know if you use a septic tank is research what kind of toilet paper NOT to use because over time it could cause you to have your tank pumped because the toilet paper you are using will not deteriorate.

I know of some middle-eastern cultures in which the left hand is reserved for cleaning oneself, especially in bedouin tribes. The left hand would then be cleaned, presumably by using sand or perhaps camel's milk. Since eating is always done with the right hand, the left never comes into contact with food. But, as punishment, Islamic culture has sometimes called for the removal of the right hand, thus forcing a person to use the same hand for both.

You think brussell sprouts smelled bad before?

    God Bless America !!

I was aware of the right hand / left hand custom and the hand amputation thing but never the connection between them. Thanks for the explanation.

We do the costco thing as well for the same reasons. I laugh every time I see one of those huge packages coming through the door wondering just how much of this stuff we need but we always seem to use it all eventually.

I remember occasionally seeing men with the newspaper in back pocket but never knew what it was for. While we are more into comfort today I think that use for the daily news is still a good one. Might be more difficult though these days since many of us read our news papers on screen.

Snow sounds like it would serve 2 purposes as it would also melt when used and also wash but talk about "Colder than a well digger's azz".

As I am sure you know many cultures such as India still do.
Perhaps this is the evolutionary history of the bidet.

It certainly is. My ADD thoughts did not end here. Led me to a whole chain of thoughts of all of the seeming small things that have only been around a few hundred years that we take for granted as necessities. Even when we are "off the grid" at the lake we still have many of them. We have indeed come a long way but as most of us regularly ask at what cost?

Sounds like it's a good idea to treat the septic tank like you treat the RV holding tank. This may be the reason why my mother almost never had to have hers pumped while my sister needs hers done every couple of years.

I wondered about the refugees myself but when you are on a life and death situation as they are I assume things other than hygiene the priority.
