Grandma Wears Combat Boots

Remember when a popular insult used to be "Your mother wears combat boots'"? Lots have changed since them and many mothers do indeed wear combat boots but that is not what this blog is about.

In this case it's great grandma wears service boots. Several years ago I was visiting my sister in MA. She was into serious hiking at the time and I did not bring any appropriate foot wear. My nephew, a at the time talked me into wearing his "service boots". In spite of my initial hesitation they were perfect.

When I next needed new heavy duty foot wear I bought some. I found that they are light while still supporting ankles, protecting feet and best of all comfortable and far less expensive then "hiking boots". Due to time constraints and arthritis making serious hiking uncomfortable and unpleasant I didn't need them for a few years and they got lost in the maze of stuff in my storage. I looked for them a few times, like when I used the chain saw but couldn't locate them until I emptied the storage. There they were, in the back sitting on a shelf.

Yesterday's task was to do the last part of what I called the appliance shuffle. With all of the moving around my family did recently we all sort of "exchanged" major appliances. Chuck had been thinking about replacing his electric dryer with a gas one for a while and one became available via my family appliance shuffle he took it. My brother in law dropped it off on his way through town a week ago.

Yesterday was "installment day". Getting major appliances in and our of a manufactured home is a challenge at best. You have to go up and down steps and then you have to find the path through the place that has doors wide enough to accommodate. Heavy work to say the least with lots of opportunity to drop stuff on feet. It was overkill but the only heavy foot gear I had was my recently recovered service boots. Perfect for the job.

My family can honestly say their mother (grandmother) (great grandmother) wears combat boots and my blue polished toe nails remained unscratched.

I still have an old pair of Army boots that I used to wear when I was in the forces. I still wear them occasionally when the occasion demands it. I would never part with them.

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

The good thing about civilization use is not need to polish. I used to wear cowboy boots all of the time for just about everything that required boots but as I aged my feet got fussier and they got too hot and too confining.

As for my work frenzy of the past few months - it's the result of putting things off for too long and damage from the renters from hell combined with most of the family making major moves and reorganization. I had no idea when I started "doing what I could" that I could still do so much. It's at a much slower pace and I need accommodations but it is getting done. I also got to feeling guilty about "playing" all of the time when my family was struggling to keep up with things.

Mine don't have the drainage holes but like all of the most recent round of service boots have fabric areas that work for both ventilation and drainage. Fortunately I have been able to avoid the need for drainage recently but there have been times in the past when I landed a foot in the stream or the like.

That is amazing that they survived and that you can still wear them.
