the other side of the story

Recently I made a remark in the lobby which caused all of the furies of hell to descend upon me.

Here is what happened: speaking with a chatter who lives about 50 miles away, I suggested that we might want to consider having dinner sometime. Then I added, unecessarily, you don't have to worry, I won't you. It was a blunder to use the highly charged word "" in such a conversation, but the operatiove word was "won't" and the intent was along the lines of "I won't bite," "it's safe to go in the water," etc.

The other chatter bristled, and I worried that I had touched a sore nerve. I then PM'ed the chatter inquiring if I had inadvertantly hit a sore subject. My intent was to express regret if I had. I got no direct answer. Several hours later I heard through a third party that I had indeed, and moreover that I was being skewered in blogs. At no time did I ever ask for details about her unfortunate experience(s). I have no desire to know.

Now to generalize just a bit -- there are some chatters who like drama and there are others who enjoy taking offense. It is distressing to me that so many others egg on those who advertise their indignation, and then turn en masse into a pack of jackals.

So that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Liszt, once again you prove what a reasonable person you are. I wish I had your forebearance.
