Stories like these are usually made up, but they often touch my heart and bring tears because there are similar stories played out in real life all the time. I know, because I have seen some of them.

Yes, that was my first thought this time. The first time I read the story years ago, I believed it and then I did some research and found the origins.
But as I said, it is a scenario that is played out in similar circumstances over and over.
