A Time to Remember----A Time To Forget.

Let us imagine the present day Afghanistan. And let us compare it with a beautiful country that was Afghanistan before 1970. Perhaps many of us could not even remember Afghanistan that thrived once upon a time across Khyber Pass that connects it with its eastern neighbor Pakistan.

Due to Afghanistan’s strategic location along the Silk Road, the country has been the home to various peoples and had to bear the brunt of numerous military invasions; notably by Alexander, Muslim Arabs, Mongols, British, Soviet Russians, and in the modern-era by Western powers. It played a role of a buffer state between British India, and the Russian Empire.

Following 1919, King Amanullah modernized the country. However, the country is now a devastated one. The suffering of the people of Afghanistan is beyond our imagination. Millions of Afghans lived in the refugee camps in Pakistan following soviet invasion and civil wars.

The worst sufferers are the women of Afghanistan.

" In fact, UN Women chief Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, has described violence against women in Afghanistan as “pandemic” with 87.2 percent of women experiencing some form of physical, psychological, sexual, economic or social violence". It is contrary to the position that Afghan women held in this country before Taliban took over the control of the country.
Those who are not aware of the fact, I take this opportunity to post here under some photos of Afghan women taken before 1970,

Appended pictures, shot at different times "from the 1950s and 60s, depict a very different Afghanistan; one where female students sat next to their male peers, where girls scouts worked along with boy scouts, where, in parks and playgrounds, buses and record stores, hospitals and schools, women were seen in equal numbers as men".

I would also like to mention that things have improved a lot now in the areas where Taliban exercise no control. Happy viewing, dear readers:

I knew someone who was from that era of Afghanistan some years ago and was amazed that he and his family described and lived the life style seen in your photos. I also knew a woman who was originally from Iran. She was so different from what we see today that she would not even identify with Iran. She considered herself Persian, not Iranian. That country too took many steps back in the past 30 - 40 years. Extremism has indeed taken it's toll.

Yes, a 'Persian' friend of mine has discussed with me her life in Iran before they had to escape when the radicals took over. Since they were of the Baha'i religion, they were harassed and had to sneak out of the country.

Spiritwoman,Hello.
Thank you so much for your Post left here on my blog. I appreciate your efforts to enrich the blog of mine by adding something you knew about the life style lived by the Afghan women prior to advent of Taliban era! In many ways, they were far
ahead of the ladies of their neighboring Sub-Continental countries.
Wish you all the best and regards too.

Hello Rocketship,
I am so glad to read from you here on my blog again. The Afghan women of that era lived a similar life as lived by their Persian neighbors. The radicals behave in similar ways every where irrespective of their being in power or not. This is my opinion. Thanks again for taking interest in the matter. Have a nice tomorrow and day after. Best wishes and regards.

Thank you for this blog, Looklook, it has brought me some more info about Afghanistan, I wasn't so interested in it before, unless hearing of the war there and also those few years back too. But I wasn't aware of their people too much also. But now where are those who got that high education. I wonder if they are still living in there. I doubt it after what that country has become now. It's a pity really.
Wishing you a nice weekend, looklook, BMN.
Kind regards,
Lisa.

Lisa, thank you so much for your comments left here on above on the information provided in the blog. People, throughout the world, specially majority of the people living in the west, can not even imagine that Afghan women of pre-Taliban era lived a life style as equal as they live now! The pictures were taken long before the year 1970. These women are supposed to be dead or living else where, probably in NWFP province of Pakistan where many Afghans took shelter initially.
Merry Christmas,Lisa MLLD. Happy Holidays.
