Man Of The Hole

Man of the Hole.

No, I am not telling here about Saddam Husain of Iraq who also lived in a hole for few months before he met his fate for the crimes that he committed when he was ruthlessly ruling Iraq! I am telling about someone who is a sole survivor of a massacred tribe.

Here under are the opening paragraphs of an e mail I received from Fiona Watson of Survival International. The appended opening paragraph of the e mail speaks for itself. As I felt for this sole survivor of an extinct tribe in Amazon, I have decided to share this portion of the e mail with other like minded members of this great site.

Quote…..
Dear friend,

He lives on his own, in complete silence, always on the run, always fearful, invisible to the world. This is the life of one solitary man in the Amazon. He’s the sole survivor of his tribe.

I first learnt about the so-called “Man of the Hole” on a research trip to the Brazilian Amazon with fieldworkers from the government’s Indian Affairs department. We were there to check that he was still alive. Walking through his forest we came into a clearing with a tiny thatched hut. Inside we found calabashes for storing water, dried nuts and a torch made from resin. We also found a hole in the centre of the hut - big enough for a person to hide in. Not wishing to encounter him, we did not linger, but I could sense his presence everywhere.

I've worked on Survival’s Brazil campaigns for more than two decades and was still profoundly moved by the Man of the Hole's story. It is believed that his tribe was massacred by cattle ranchers in the late 80s. When he dies the genocide of his people will be complete.
Unquote…

Human greed knows no bound. The cattle ranchers who are believed to have massacred this man’s tribe do claim themselves human beings too. Are they really human beings, dear readers?

Happy reading:

Hello Roxy,
Delighted to read from you here your highly meaningful comments on the blog posted here on above. I do not know whether this sole survivor is still alive or not. I understand that the concerned department of the Brazilian Government has stopped looking for him so that he can live in peace until he is taken away by his God from there. I agree with what you have mentioned in your post. I wonder when will man’s inhumanity to man would finally end...!!!
Have a wonderful Holiday season. Take care.

Looklook, thank you for this blog, I have never heard of that man till now, unless in your this blog of yours. It's incredible how he has been running and hiding till now, but good that the Government has taken care of him now. An interesting read, thanks again.
Enjoy your weekend, Looklook MBN.
With all my best wishes.
Lisa.

Lisa, thanks for visiting the blog and also for leaving something positive on the page to ponder upon.
Yes , Lisa, the man has been running and hiding himself from a particular brand of greedy people called civilized human beings! It pleases me to learn that FUNAI, Brazil’s Indian Affairs Department, has decided not to contact the ‘Man of the Hole’, but to enlarge his tiny territory by 3,000 hectares to give him more space and more game to hunt. I have, this morning uploaded three more pictures for you and others to see and ponder.
Have a nice weekend Lisa MLLD. With all my best and warm regards.
