Dahlias.......

My Favorite Dahlias!!

Dahlias are my favorite flowers. They are my delight! May be, it is also the delight of each and every gardener too!! A good gardener takes special care to grow Dahlias though this particular kind of flower that comes in now in a burst of bright colors with sizes varying from small bulbs to huge ones, can be grown almost everywhere in this planet with little effort!

There was a time when dahlias used to grow in the wild, mostly in Mexico, on its own as a gift from the nature to those who loved flowers! In other words, it will not be wrong to say that dahlia is native to Mexico.
'
The tubers were also grown as a food crop by the Aztecs, but no more. The practice died out after the Spanish conquest of Mexico.
The Aztecs also used them to treat epilepsy, and employed the long hollow stem of the dahlia for water pipes.

It was declared the national flower of Mexico in 1963.

However, we can see it now blooming in the gardens throughout the world, in various sizes, and colors, that are really feasts for the eyes!

My readers, who are interested to learn more about this delightful flower, may please consult the free encyclopedia initially. Meantime they may kindly view some of the picture of these colorful flowers here under:

Happy Viewing:

These were my Mother's favourites too.

Because of the cold winter temperatures here, she would religiously dig up the roots in the Fall and put them in the root cellar for the winter.

Hello, Rocketship,
Your mother was surely a lady who loved the gift of the nature to human kind--the flowers! She knew how to grow this colorful flower!Like your dear mother, we also plant the flower in winter.
Take care Rocket and stay happy always!

Shartaun,Hello,
Thank you so much for stopping by the blog and appreciating the photography and the brightness of the color of the flowers. Shartaun, my contribution to the photography is nil as I was not the photographer. True, I had a wonderful gardener who loved flowers. However, he has since retired from doing active Job like gardening!
Thanks once again for your comments. Please Stay happy and cheerful!

Mrs.Joe,
The climatic condition in your area may not assist you to dig up the roots and store them for next winter. However, may be, you can dig up the roots in the fall like what our friend Rocketship’s mother did and put them in the cellar! But again, I do not know whether the effort will be fruitful or not! It would do no harm if you try this at least once!
It was nice reading from you here once more and hope that you would be here always in future too. Best wishes. Have always pleasant times!

lulugravy,hello,
Understood, lulugravy how you mastered the art of growing Dahlias when you were a child! Nothing goes to waste what we learn in our child hood,Lulu. You are an example of that. You still grow the flower and know how to dig up the roots and then divide and trade them with other Dahlia growers!
Thank you so much for stopping by and reading the post! The post that you have left here on the blog is also appreciated by me!
Have wonderful and pleasant times! Always stay happy and take care of yourself,

Hello,spiritwoman,
Delighted to read from you here as usual. I did not also know even a few years back that Dahlias are native to Mexico and the tubers were also grown as a food crop by the Aztecs in addition to using them to treat epilepsy, and employing the long hollow stem of the dahlia for water pipes. Dahlias were both gathered in the wild and cultivated.
Thanks once again for leaving a comment on my blog. I appreciate. Have a nice time!

traveler,hello,
Thanks for appreciating the pictures of the flowers uploaded on the blog page. However , credits for the pictures should go to them who had actually shot them.. I could not post their names as i have misplaced the list somewhere!!
You have correctly guessed that someday some one may start cultivating the tubers to supplement their food. Think about the Soybeans and Sunflowers!
Take care and stay always happy, traveler.

Carolyn,hello.
Delighted to read from you here again after sometimes. It pleases me most to ponder upon what you leave here for us to read! I could feel why your mother felt proud for the Dinner plate size dahlias grown by her! The larger variety of this particular flower is always compared with a dinner plate every where in this blue planet!
I note that you would like to do a little bit of research on the matter. Hope you would succeed to find what you would be looking for in this respect. May be, it will also be possible on your part to put up a blog detailing your findings for us to read.
Thanks once again, Carolyn for your kind visit , Take care of yourself and always remain cheerful.

LadyoftheLuck ,

I am happy to read from you here on my blog page. Flowers are forever. I have not seen any one so long who does not like flowers. You seem to be exceptional one who grows flower under a very difficult weather condition. I live alone in my house. I have now concentrated on planting fruit trees on my yard for posterity.
You must not cry. You have many things there that we may not have here. It is always better to smile under all circumstance!
Have a nice and pleasant time.Take care of yourself.

Hello Rubi,
Thanks, Karen, for visiting my blog once again after a considerable time. Flowers are always beautiful and nice to look at everywhere they grow. You know that nature takes a colorful look around everything nearby when the flowers bloom. It may be the place where you dwell in your city or my village home surrounded by trees—tall and short! Sorry for delay in responding as I had to visit the Hospital and stay there two nights for check up. Stay well and happy always and take care of yourself.

Wonder, have I requested any one for anything at any place??? I do not recollect having done any such thing here in this site! No wonder your comment has made me confused!
Perhaps you are aware of that the worker bees are not known to sting the queen bee of the hive! Yet, do not be amazed if it happens one day by mistake when a crazy one among nearly 60,000 worker bees busy for collecting honey for the hive does it! It will be very painful and therefore must be avoided!!

It appears from your above post that you did not allow the bumble bees to live in peace when you were a kid and for this act, you did never get stung by any of these bees. You should consider yourself lucky for not getting stung ever. May be, these bees being lethargic, were either unable or reluctant to sting their queen! Thanks once again for stopping by my post.

FreshEmerald,
Thank you so much for being here on my blog page and for leaving some decent words on it for me to read! I feel really pleased that this particular blog has taken you back to the golden time when your grandmother used to grow dahlias the size of dinner plates! You are surely lucky because you could have seen your grandmother alive and active and you can cherish her memory and let it live on!
