First Day of spring brings color in life The day when we mingle with nature! It is spring time now here in my country. The people of Bangladesh have since welcomed this year “Pahela Falgun”, the first day of the spring according to Bengali Calendar, clad in brightly colored (mostly yellow, orange and red) dresses on February 13, 2018 last. Thousands of young men and women had started gathering in the festival places from the morning and celebrated the day singing songs, reciting poems and dancing. Falgun is the eleventh month in the Bengali calendar (First day of the month usually falls on Feb 13 of the Gregorian calendar). We have six seasons in this part of the world. Among them, spring is considered as the king when birds start to sing and dance in the warm sunshine, colorful flowers bloom in the gardens and in the wild, and nature takes a new look throughout the country. Spring lasts here until middle of April. Appended are some photos of young men and women, boys and girls, dressed in mostly yellow and red, some of them also adorned themselves with spring flowers such as Shimul, Polash and Marigold for welcoming the day. Photos of wild spring flowers are also posted for the viewers to see and enjoy. Sources: The Daily Star and The Daily Sun |

Absolutely beautiful Looklook! I love the one with the bird, and the first one is glorious! We here in the UK haven't got that far yet...it's still cold damp winter here!

Looklook, I love to see pictures from your part of the world because they are always so colorful and show things that I have and will never see. That first picture is spectacular, and I assume the whole tree is covered with clumps of yellow like that? The orange flowers look like flames! The pictures you share of people in traditional garb having celebrations look like such a colorful and happy time too. Thank you for sharing. Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

I am delighted to read from you here on my Blog page. Thank you so much for your comments, the last line of which has reminded me the last line of English romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley's famous poem reading as under: "O, wind, if winter comes, can spring be far behind?" Katie, you sure haven't got that far yet but spring is not far behind in UK. It is knocking at the door! Stay well and happy always.

It always makes me happy when I read from you here on my blog page. You are right that the whole tree is almost covered with clumps of yellow! We call the orange flower as palash. While the last one is called Krishnachura, the yellow one is known as Sonalu (Golden). The First day of spring brings happiness to all of us living any where in this country. Glad to see Mr. Joe with you. Kindly say hello to him on my behalf. Stay well and live long.

Deborahsu hello, Thank you so much for liking the pictures. I have uploaded the photos only to make my readers understand how colorful such celebrations could be in this country. This is a cultural event that is celebrated by everyone, irrespective of Caste, Creed, Race, and Religion! We expect to celebrate Bengali New Year day on April 14, 2018 which is a public holiday. It is also an event celebrated throughout the country just like “Pahela Falgun"--the first day of spring. Your Mom surely liked flowers. Flowers are forever! It is nice of you to maintain the garden remembering your Mom even after she passed away. Your three year old great-grandson appears to be very imaginative. He could rightly imagine an opening in the sky through which Granny could see her flowers. Never mind about the typo mistake. We all do it. Stay well, Deb and take care of yourself.

Oh my LookLook your pictures are wonderful. They are so colorful and bright. These pictures makes one forget about all the strife and suffering in this world of ours. Spring is around the corner here. Daffodils and snowdrops are in bloom. There is a Japanese plum tree in the neighborhood that is full of blossoms. It always blooms early and it is a welcome sight. But alas tonight it i has turned cold and we are getting snow. Tomorrow the low will be -8 C and on Monday it will be -7 C. So winter garb is still very much needed as yet. Thank you for posting these wonderful array of photos.

Karin, you are absolutely correct. The photos communicate the Joy of living in this country. Please look at the girl child (Photo#6) on the lap of her father. Are they not enjoying everything? Both of them are dressed up maintaining the dress code of the day! On this day, every Bangladeshi rediscovers his identity! Let me take this opportunity to post here below a song written by the Bengali Nobel Laureate poet Tagore on Spring; "Ah! Today in spring many a flower blooms Many a flute plays, many a bird sings A tender flower, her heart Withers away unattended Why draw near? Smile for no reason? The one who did come close Wishes not to approach anymore Joyful who are, in joy remain Joyous spring, in joy may it end A woebegone woman’s tears May they not espy In seeing, they see not In knowing, they know not They do not even look back." The poet seems to be looking for someone on this day whom he misses very much! I am doing fine now. Thanks for showing concern. Take Care. Stay Happy and cheerful always. Anam

You have all the signs of incoming spring in Vancouver soon even though temperature has gone down below the freezing point in the area where you live. It must be a temporary phenomenon. May be, after tomorrow, the temperature would start to go up again as expected. You are going to get pleasant temperature soon. Thanks again for your post. Have a wonderful spring this year free from snow! Take care!
