Profiling Individuals and Voters!

“Education took us from Thumb impression to signature…! Technology took us from signature to thumb impression!”

---Indian Supreme court Justice A K Sikri said while delivering verdict on constitutionality of Aadhaar on behalf of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A M Khanwilkar and himself. He further observed that Aadhaar has "empowered marginalized sections of the society by giving them identity!”

Aadhaar is the world's largest Biometric ID system. The Aadhar number is a 12-digit random number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India to the residents after satisfying the verification process laid down by the Authority.
However, some Indian Civil Liberty Groups and Social Action Forums have been opposing the project over privacy concerns.
Justice D Y Chandrachud said, Aadhaar violates the privacy of rights as it could possibly lead to profiling of persons and voters.

I feel that they are right because the system has compromised privacy. At the same time, Aadhaar's positive sides must not be overlooked. I wonder how many of the readers would agree with me. Because, the system is gradually being introduced in many countries of the world in various forms. We have our own biometric Aadhaar card called Smart Card.

By the by, Aadhaar has reminded me about George Orwell's allegorical novella "Animal Farm" published in England on August 17, 1945.

Frankly, I'm not particularly bothered with being finger printed. We are already identified in other ways eg. social security numbers.

I don't even mind the cameras surveilling people in the streets or other public places.

LOOK, I HATE TO SAY IT BUT PRIVACY HARDLY EXISTS ANYMORE SO IF THE BIOMETRIC SYSTEM ENTITLES DISADVANTAGED MEMBERS OF SOCIETY, WHAT THE HELL. WE ARE ALREADY PROFILED IF WE PURCHASE ITEMS VIA INTERNET OR EVEN OUR SUPERMARKET PERKS CARDS. GOVERNMENT AGENCIES FOLLOW US IN JUST ABOUT EVERY STEP OF OUR LIFE. OUR SMART PHONE AND INTERNET PROVIDERS SELL CLIENT LISTS OF LOADS OF BUSINESSES; pRIVACY HAS BECOME AN ILLUSION MY FRIEND.

hiramhankwilliam, thanks for your opinion. However, I feel like telling you that fingerprints cannot be kept hidden under any circumstance. Therefore, the question of trying to hide the prints by folks does not arise. No one would take such a foolish step to hide something like fingerprints. Profiling individuals are now practiced in a number of countries of the world. All these Countries are known to us. You have experienced something that I have never experienced in my life. Therefore, I have no comments to make in this respect. BTB, Sure, God will provide. God is omnipotent.

Rocketship,Like you, I no longer feel disgusted when I am required to provide fingerprints to prove my identity. There was a time when we were told by our parents that God is everywhere and He is constantly watching us. Maybe, future parents would warn their children about the Cameras and ask them to behave! Take Care, Rocket. Stay cheerful.

Archer, You are absolutely right. I have no reason to disagree with you. The entire world has probably turned into a place where we live under constant surveillance! The human beings are now accustomed to live like that. Stay well and happy,my friend.

brightsmile, glad to read from you here again after such a long time. Perhaps the word "privacy" would disappear from the dictionary completely in the near future or it will be considered as a "slang" word by the dictionary editors! Our future generation may even miss the most private moments of their lives fearing the presence of a surveillance Gadget somewhere nearby! Take care, my friend. Have a pleasant time.
