Two Leaves and a Bud Two Leaves and a Bud --Reposted. While having breakfast in the morning, many of us like to drink at least a cup of tea to start the day’s work. Tea is one of the most sought-after hot beverages in the world now. Legend has it that tea originated in China almost 5000 years ago. Emperor Shen Nung, who ruled China in the 28th century BC, is credited with the discovery of tea. The year of discovery of tea is believed to be 2738 BC, Emperor Nung is the first person who sniffed the fragrant brew and drunk with pleasure. Being a Benevolent Ruler, he decided to share the wondrous brew with his subjects, and tea was born! Tea was first considered a medicinal herb and was infused from green untreated leaves. In later years, the Chinese found its better uses, and once found, tea was on the path of popularity. From the beginning of the 8th century, tea became integral to the lives of the rich and privileged people of South Asian countries, especially China and Japan. It was then no more a drink; it became a symbol of hospitality and a ceremony. My homeland, Bangladesh is the 10th largest tea growing country in the world. The largest and the first commercial tea plantation in the Indian sub-continent was located in Malnicherra in the Sylhet district of Bangladesh. It was established in 1849 on 1500 acres of land. The country has now a total number of 163 tea estates. How tall a tea plant could grow if not disturbed? It will grow into a tree of up to 16 m (52 ft). However, cultivated plants are pruned to waist height for ease of plucking. Only the top 1-2 inches of matured plants are picked. Workers who pick tea on plantations unfortunately usually face exploitations. It is widely reported that they are being often exploited by the plantation owners. Workers are underpaid and usually earn below the living wage. In my country, 75% of plantation workers are women. Tea contains catechins, a type of antioxidant. It also contains amino acid L-theanine and small amounts of Theobromine and Theophylline. Tea does not contain Tannic Acid.           |

LOOK, THANK YOU FOR THE VERY INSTRUCTIVE BLOG. HERE IN EUROPE WE HAVE BEEN INFORMED THAT GREEN TEA HELPS FIGHT OFF THE COVID VIRUS. I DO NOT KNOW IF THAT IS TRUE BUT I DRINK GREEN TEA FOR BREAKFAST ALMOST EVERY MORNING. WHAT A SHAME THE WORKERS ARE EXPLOITED. SO MANY EMPLOYERS EVEN HERE THINK WOMEN CAN BE PAID LESS THAN MEN FOR EXACTLY THE SAME WORK. I DOUBT YOU AND I WILL SEE ANY IMPROVEMENT IN THAT SITUATION.

Interesting. My morning usually starts with coffee, but throughout the day I enjoy many other beverages. Those include bottled green tea, and cups of hot tea. One of favorite is what I call "Tiger Tea" because it has a picture of a tiger on the box of tea bags. I believe it's actually an herbal tea called Bengal Spice. Merry Christmas to and your family..... and Happy Holiday for any other holiday that you observe at this time of year. Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

Thanks for an informative post. It's interesting how the humble tea leaf has evolved to become such a popular beverage world wide. It was also interesting to read that Emperor Shen Nong discovered tea accidentally when a leaf from an overhanging wild tea tree fell into his pot while boiling water outside. He's an example of fortune favouring the bold - I'm not sure I'd be that brave drinking an infusion with unknown properties as many plants produce deadly chemicals; e.g. Socrates chose hemlock tea as his preferred manner of death.

Thank you for the history of tea, Looklook. I like organic Matcha Green with Turmeric in the evening. I add honey to sweeten the drink. I saw pictures of tea plantations in India that grow tea under organic conditions. Samples of the soil and plants are controlled by the contractors at different times while the plants are growing. Mostly the fields are small and family operated. Happiness is when what you think, what you say, what you do are in harmony - M. Gandhi

Delighted to read from you here on my blog page. I am addicted to drinking Tea. Now I drink both Herbal and Green Tea. Someday, it would be possible for you to visit a tea estate either here in my green country or elsewhere. You never know when the day would knock at your doors. I always used to be a coffee drinker in the morning but I seldom drink it anymore and now drink Earl Gray tea. It isn't acidic on my stomach like coffee. I buy my tea at a speciality shop where they sell tea and coffee. These are lovely pictures LookLook. Stay well and healthy during these Covid times.
