The Hunter and the Hunted

Nature Quest

The hunter is a blue-tailed bee-eater!
The hunted is a dragonfly in the hunter's mouth!
The hunter flies away with the dragonfly in its mouth (or beak or whatever).
This slender bird also eats insects such as bees, wasps, and dragonflies while on flight.

The photo credit goes to Rajib Raihan.

Continuing the sequence, bee-eater nests may be raided by rats and snakes, and the adults are hunted by birds of prey such as the Levant sparrow hawk and owls...

A cousin of ours used to make us watch spiders luring the flies into his web.
I didnt like it but watched. I always thought he was a very cruel cousin. We were only small kids.

Robyn, your post above has made me thoughtful. We know that lifeforms need food to stay alive. The methods adopted by each lifeform to satisfy the pang of hunger may look strange to us. But none of the known lifeforms can match us, humans, in this respect. Just consider a fisherman, sitting on the bank of a water body for hours together waiting for a fish to bite the hook hanging deep in the water. Thanks for stopping by and for the post. Take care and be safe.

Robyn.... Your comment reminded me of something I read many many years ago on another site.
In an animal rights group during a discussion on how inhuman it was to kill chickens, pigs, cattle someone posted, " It's terrible for these animals to be killed. People should just get their meat at the grocery store!"
~~ Maybe it was just a joke, but now soooo many people are not aware of what it takes to put food in a grocery store.... whether it's animal or vegetable.

Archer, to speak frankly, the answer to your question is, 'I don't know". You don't need to import blue-tailed bee-eaters from our parts of the world because flycatcher birds are available in your parts of the world too. The European pied flycatcher bird commonly feeds on spiders, ants, bees, and similar prey.
Take Care. Be safe. Don't get bitten by either a mosquito or a bee.

The photographer, Rajib Raihan, caught the moment in his camera at the right time. All credit goes to him. He happens to be a bird watcher too. I feel happy to read your post, Maudie. Be safe always.
