Sooo many people who do not stop to think or look. Sign "Please ask Sales Associate for items on top shelf" and the dummy stands on tiptoe and edges the item off with the fingertips, or stands on lower shelf.

I hope he loses too. The store's insurance should cover his medical bills, lost income, and perhaps a suitable compensation, but millions is ridiculous. If there is a real safety issue and someone gets hurt, that would be another story.
Our country is so filled with these kinds of lawsuit settlements, and others are encouraged to try for it, that business insurance rates go higher and higher..... just like doctor's malpractice insurance rates.
Who pays for all that? We, the consumer, of course. You mentioned the employees, but prices will also be adjusted to compensate for the higher premiums the store has to pay.
Accidents happen..... that's why they are called accidents. Oh, and btw, (I wonder if the insurance lawyers thought about it..... I'm sure they must have) many broken hips are not the result of a fall, but actually the cause of it.
