I have more than a few qualms about taking down tributes to events or people when they are no longer fondly remembered.

Past history, no matter how misguided in retrospect, should not be forgotten.

Rather than tearing them down, I would prefer the addition of a plaque giving some perspective on the matter.

We have a few of these in Canada.

In Halifax a statue of Cornwallis is being vilified.

In Montreal there is a big memorial in Dominion Square paid for by the merchants of Montreal honouring the Canadians who went to South Africa to help out the Brits in the Boer War.
