Aging Homo Sapiens and the Drums of War:

Listening to the news this morning took Helga and I on a trip down memory lane. The whole Crimea thing is reminiscent of the Danzig Corridor dispute that led to World War ll. The Germans wanted access to their port of Danzig and East Prussia. Hitler was attempting to regain any land lost in World War l and eventually easy access to the Soviet Union to fulfill his promise of destroying Communism.
It is easy to sort all of this out in hindsight and question many of decisions made by the leaders of the European nations. The British and French allied with Poland but never ended up sending any troops to the aid of the Poles who were subjected to the blitzkrieg which took them by surprise.
The bone of contention is now Crimea, populated by a number of ethnic Russians and in fact was part of Russia until they gave it to the Ukraine. It is cause enough for a war if the Russians are denied access by the new government in Kiev which quite probably will be aligned with the America, and European Union. Easy access to the Black Sea is integral for Russia as they have a fleet of warships stationed in the area.
It is really doubtful that the USA will commit to a hot war at this point in time so we are probably headed for another Cold War. Well I guess we can hope.
Russia is aligned with China, Syria and the Islamic state of Iran. So there will a lot of muscle flexing and none other that Bandar bin Sultan of Saudi Arabia has been flexing his by trying to warn Russia off but President Putin doesn't scare easy. So all this leaves the current American president in a bit of a quandary.
You know the older you get the more you realize that the more things change the more they stay the same.

Hi Tag: Interesting blog. All through history politicians have been ordering soldiers to their deaths to fight one war after another. Whatever the winner country may gain can never make up for all the devastation and loss of lives.

I'm reading a book about the history of various wars throughout the centuries and OMG the numbers of people dead, injured, missing, starved, etc is shocking.

Here are some statistics of just a couple of wars:

WW1 - 10,000,000 dead
WW2 - 50,000,000 dead, 35,000,000 injured, 3,000,000 missing

Wars are for the rich man to get richer. The poor man dies.

I so sympathize with the people of the Ukraine!! I don't think that there are many countries with more wars fought in, around, and above their fields, villages, and cities.

We in N. America are sooooo very fortunate, in modern history, to not have had a war fought on our soil.
