My Georgia Visit Continues

I left off saying we were going to Sylvia's Grille Friday night. This is one of Alfie's favorite restaurants. We had dinner with his step and their families. He wanted me to try the crab cake sandwich. This is owned by a man named Josh who used to be the cook. When the previous owners were leaving he bought it and turned it into a very pretty, somewhat classy restaurant. I didn't expect that, but should have when I saw the spelling Grille instead of Grill like I first said, also the pretty stained glass out front.

Wouldn't you know, they were out of crab cakes! They must be a hot item and they had a special at lunchtime that day plus Valentine's Day was 2 days earlier. Then...they only had one bottle of Killian's Red Beer, again because of Valentine's Day they ran out. Alfie laughed and said, bring me the manager! Out comes Josh saying, someone said there is a crazy Englishman raising cain! He and Alfie have become friends over time. He told Alfie he would bring him a glass of the best wine in the house, on the house. He actually brought 2.

On Saturday we headed to the butts. They weren't home but we got to see Millie and Clyde. They came up to the fence and were happy to see their old buddy Alfie. We petted them the best we could and left.

It was pretty chilly so we decided to forget the Derelict House until warmer weather. Oh well...

We went to the Governor's Mansion and took a tour. They asked if we minded touring with a State Senator (forget his name, not being from Georgia)and a group of Young Republicans.

The Mansion was where 8 Governors lived from 1839 to 1868 when they moved the capitol from Milledgeville to Atlanta. There is still a lot of original furniture, pictures, etc. Very interesting tour!

After that we drove around town and went through the old Memory Hill Cemetery. I like old cemeteries and so does he.

Saturday night we met friends of Alfie's for dinner at Ruby Tuesdays. I had met them day before. After we ate we went back to Alfie's and visited. I really like them. He is a little Italian guy with a great swagger! I laughed when they walked in the restaurant and I saw his walk. I told him about it and he said he learned to walk like that growing up in Brooklyn so he could "stay alive". lol

Sunday morning we went to church. I met the 2 ladies I him that they have the "hots" for him. What a great bunch of people and they treated me like family. The Minister's wife brought her puppy, a new Chihuahua the mother had pushed away, so the owners called the Minister's wife and asked if she would take it. It was so tiny and wrapped in a pink blanket. She had to bring it to church as it was being bottle fed. It was the hit of the church members. Not one peep did it make.

After church Alfie said, I am taking you somewhere. We drove and drove, wound up in Juliette, Georgia where they filmed the movie Fried Green Tomatoes. We ate lunch at the Whistle Stop Cafe. We both got the Fried Green Tomato Sandwich. It is battered and crisp with a slice of Swiss cheese, crisp bacon, dark leaf lettuce, onion and mayo on light rye bread. Yummy! I am not a fan of fried green tomatoes but I sure enjoyed this!! Guess I never had them cooked right.

There are several little shops across from the restaurant we wandered through. It is a real little town and very old. The train came flying through just like in the movie. Out back is the barbecue pit. Lots of items had the saying -It's all in the sauce!

Sunday night Alfie's step had the family over for dinner. She makes wonderful salmon cakes I have heard so much about. She had her butter beans and squash casserole. Talk about good ole southern cooking!

Monday we went to breakfast, visited his sister in law and husband. I can see us being good friends! We left their house and went to the shuttle to the airport. Time to go...

Well....the "perks"?? of Georgia are, fire ants, palmetto bugs, lots of humidity, the state bird is the mosquito, ticks, you get the idea! lol

Had a wonderful time!! Thanks for your English Southern Hospitality.

I was pleased to play host to such a very charming visitor. When are you coming again? Don't wait too long or you'll miss the invasion of the pine roaches and the 110 degree heat, with 100 degree humidity, now that is a real treat. Great blog you wrote here, I was there with you, but still enjoyed reading it. The Senator's name is Johnny Grant and he is the man for this area. His family keep a jewellers shop here in Milledgeville.

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Sounds like you had a great time Ann. Lovely food and good company what more could you want. I loved that film, Fried Green Tomatoes.
