Are we better off today?

We are all used to some of the modern conveniences like microwave ovens and TVs and computers and such. I can't live without any of those things. I sometimes wonder how anyone survived before all these things were invented. Microwave ovens weren't invented when I was a so we used a regular oven. Everything we cooked. took so long. We didn't have PVRs but we still had TV. Before TV, people used the radio and actually met people and mingled. In some ways, those were better times. I've always had a TV but my parents said they socialized more.

Are we better off today? Are there things you can't live without?

I can live without a microwave, I don't own one, but I would hate to be without my Kitchenaid!!!
I used to mix my cookie batters by hand, then came the electric mixers, which couldn't handle the thick dough and would burn out. Nope, don't want to do without it!
I can live without my stove and oven, I like cooking outdoors and have all the camping equipment. Nothing like food cooked on an open campfire!!
No TV, but I would miss my PC, but still, I could live without that as well.
We are better off today as far as conveniences go, but in other ways, no, I think we depend on them too much.

Elaine in some ways I think we rely on TV and social media for entertainment. We had a black and white TV which didn't have the best reception as we had to use rabbit ears or an antenna on the roof. Before that we had a radio and I recall listening to the soaps on the radio. In the summer time we would pick peas in the morning so we could listen to these programs on the radio in the afternoon. I don't think we suffered if we missed one of them as our chores came first.

The good old days as we call them. Well I think in some ways they were. I was reared in the country and we had very little. Ten of us in the family but we were very happy. We spent our days outdoors playing all kind of games; going fishing in our local River Slaney.

Life was much less complex and so much safer than now. I know things were hard at times on my mother, washing clothes by hand; knitting; sewing and baking and other endless chores but I know for a fact that she was content with her lot. One thing that stands out in my mind is our neighbours popping in every morning for a cuppa and a chat and a laugh..My parents instilled good manners, respect and honesty in us as children and I'm grateful to them for that. I can honestly say I had a lovely childhood.

Great answer, Nileyears. You can do with so many things that I couldn't live without. Good for you!!!

I heard Guiding Light was on the radio but I never heard it there myself. It must have been very different, Shartaun03. I do remember the rabbit ears and definitely had a black and white TV until my parent's 25th anniversary, when we bought them a color TV.

It sounds wonderful, Maura. I can't talk about all your siblings but if you are typical of your family, your parents raised great children.

I like all of the conveniences but do just as well at the lake with nothing but camping gear. Thinking back I could really made use of a microwave when I had to keep dinner warm for a husband with an erratic schedule. A cell phone would have made being a working mom much easier. But we never missed what we didn't have, managed just fine and were happy.

That's true, Spirit, we didn't miss what we didn't have. That said, I wouldn't want to go back to not having those things.

I couldn't agree more, Pat. I think the kids of today aren't spending as much quality time with others.

Thanks for all that, Bill. We are definitely dependent on electricity. That's progress, I guess.
