COMPUTERS SUCK

I spent all day on my computer yesterday, trying to stop it from going on an automatic repair loop. I gave up at about 4am, exhausted. Today I called tech support (last resort since they usually make things worse) and I found out my hard drive is broken. My computer isn't even 2 years old. Luckily I bought an extended warranty. I have to wait until the repair depot gets the part and makes a service call. Until then, I am using my laptop and frankly, I'm not fond of laptops.

To make matters worse, I record shows using an external TV Tuner. Based on location, I had to now set it to work with my laptop and have to type leaning toward the laptop. Needless to say, I won't be on the computer as much for the next couple of days.

Do you get many computer issues?

I am so sorry to hear about your computer woes. I don't even own a desk top anymore. I am on my second lap top and I love it. I also have an IPAD and that is another story. It was given to me as a going away gift last December. I guess I need to spend more time on it but how many gizmos does a person need anyway. My latest woe n my laptop is my WIFI. My nephew installed a new one for me and it keeps going down and I either fix it from my computer or I have to reboot it. There isn't any rhyme or reason when it decides to shut down so that is a problem. My nephew is too busy right now with their new baby and his parents who arrived last week to see the new grandchild. So I will lump along until he gets time to figure it all out.

Yes, computers and routers can be a pain. I need my desktop for my books. Thanks for your comment, Shartaun03.

Elaine, that is so strange that your hard drive would conk out on your after only 2 years, so sorry to hear that!! Hmmm also strange that you don't care for your laptop. I got rid of my PC when I bought my first laptop years ago and I use it often as I also have my own business. I also have a great techie who lives about 45 miles away & can come online to fix most issues. I pay him an annual fee & it works well for both of us. I do wish you well with your PC.

Computer are like the child in this little poem.

There was a little girl,
Who had a little curl,
Right in the middle of her forehead.
When she was good,
She was very, very good.
But when she was bad,
She was horrid!

Sorry to hear your computer is stuck in a loop. Like you, I really don't like laptops, I've tried them, not my cup of tea.

I just got a new PC, not that my old one was broken, but because the Vista is now obsolete. I now have Windows 8.1, and I get so P OED with it at times. Before Vista, I had XP, which I loved, but just like Vista, the program became obsolete!!

I swear they do this on purpose just so we can consume away, but I have found places where you can donate your old computers, TV sets, and cell phones so they are not thrown into landfills, or sent overseas to trash out other countries. Staples is one and Goodwill is the other, you can check with your local stores to see what they will take.

I guess everyone has their preference. I like desktops and my backup is a laptop. Thanks frenchsalsa.

Absolutely true. I always say that I love computers when they are working. When they fail, they're a big pain. Thanks Rocket.

My PC is a touch under 2 years so it's staying with me. I too had XP in my last PC. They do it so we will buy more computers. I'm sure that's true, Rae. Thanks for your comment.

I'm the one that solves computer issues in my family, Pat. This time it's hardware so a part is needed. Thanks for your comment.

I much prefer the desktop computer, I've tried laptops and am not keen on them. Hope you get things fixed soon and get back online with your desktop.

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Computers earned me pretty good living for over 3o years, so I don't complain very often.

In their favour I must say they are cheaper than cars.

I just make sure I have the important stuff backed up, and if my hard disk fries itself, I just replace it or buy an new PC. Replacing a disk costs about $150.

Can't get a new car for $400.

Thanks Alfie. The tech was here and now it seems I need a new motherboard and bluray drive. That will be 3 major parts in under 2 years. Luckily I'm under warranty. I have no idea when the tech will come back with those parts. I'm not feeling very happy with Dell right now. Thanks for your wishes and comment.

I know what you mean, Rentier1, and you're right. Problem is that I don't know how to put an internal hard drive in my unit. Right now I'm under warranty. Thanks for your valid comment.

I hate laptops and Desktops -- I have my iPhone and IPad and they both are excellent and that's I guess all I need
It really depends what you use a computer for. I need a desktop versus an Ipad. I'm glad you have what you need, Diane. Thanks for your comment.

On the matter of personal computers, i just did some investigation into free anti-virus software.

I was using a paid service called Kaspersky.

I uninstalled it a few months ago because it was chewing up my hard drive space with its log files, and I couldn't figure out how to delete them. Kaspersky was no help on this matter.

The software I found is called Pandora.
There is a basic free version, as well as enhanced versions that you pay for.

I found it in a review of free anti-virus software in PC Magazine.
It's easy to install.

I ran a full scan after installation, and it found 98 suspicious items that neither Windows Defender nor McAfee spotted. it quarantied them all, and stopped the annoying pop-up ads I had been getting that I couldn't locate.

In my case, it's hardware related. I use Avast but I've still had issues over the years. Thanks for saying about Pandora. If/when I ever get my desktop back up and working, I might check it out. Thanks for your comment, Rentier1.

Oops!

My mistake.

The free anti-virus software I installed is called Panda, not Pandora.
